TBH, if I found myself at a footie match I'd want something to stave off the boredom, and an irritating plastic horn would be better than nothing.

With the multi-channel audio capabilities on modern tv.s it is a travesty that a clean feed of commentary-only is not offered.

I'm all in favour of locals doing local things locally but we should be able to choose which bits get imported.

What the hell is the reason behind the damn things - they're not musical in way, just a monotonous single tone that combined with several thousand others sounds like a million wasps with a chuff on. It totally destroys the traditional crowd noise and singing that makes a footie match SOUND like a footie match. Also causes problems for the players (a few have complained already) because they can't always hears the ref's whistle or communicate with other players.

You are clearly missing the fact that this is "traditional crowd noise"!  It's another country!  It doesn't belong to us!  We're not supposed to tell them what their tradition is!  Been there done that.

Fortunately I won't be watching much of the WC so the din shouldn't affect me too much (I hope).

I take your point there Chris, but these vuvuzelas only started being used at South African football matches in the late 90's, so it's a comparatively recent tradition.

That's how they do it in South Africa. The South Americans drum and the Europeans get drunk and smash the place up. I think I'd rather the Vuvuzelas for the rest of the World Cup, than see it blighted by any form of anti-social crap that usually goes along with football.

I am sure that the Vuvuzelas also raise a bit of revenue, and yes, while annoying, they do add some flavour and atmosphere to the whole thing. And from what I have seen, considering all the bad stuff that has gone on and does go on in the country, they are doing a good job as being hosts.

It is, after all, the World Cup.

Perhaps when (and if) England host it, we can treat the world to crappy beer and pies, lots of blue 'chanting' from the stands and some on and off terrace violence, you know, the good old traditional way, the way football should be supported

altho New Zealand are there? whats that about - we have to get past the Italians, the Dutch, French, Czechs and Greeks in europe, NZ qualified from a group consisting of, Fiji, Vanatau, and  New Caledonia.....and I've only heard of Fiji out of those

I personally find them annoying, but if its in their football culture, and used all the time at their matches, apart from commenting how WE find it distracting or annoying they seem to be immune to it and used to it. i wonder how they will find matches over here with the whole crowd singing "you'll never walk alone" or some of our "traditional" football chants? live and let live, I say.
