EU commission austerity measures?
« on: 18 June 2010, 14:40:16 »

At the risk of setting off the anti EU brigade again.

There is going to be or there is already pain while countries try and sort out their deficits. Fine it needs to be done.

However has the EU commission itself also slashed its spending or is that continuing unabated. Not just the cost of admin but all the billions of OUR money that is doled out for New roads, bridges, anti flood schemes. Has a brake been put on that?? I suppose the answer is no.   I bet the administrators haven't had a 5% pay cut and retirement age raised !!

Eurocrats will get the 3.7 per cent pay rise despite negative or near to zero rates of inflation across Europe, soaring unemployment, falling wages and austerity measures in most national public sectors.

Despite never having been elected to public office, Lady Ashton will now earn over £52,000 more than Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister.

Unlike the Eurocrats, most British public sector workers, including front line doctors and nurses, are facing pay freezes as the government reins in public spending that has been bloated by bank bailouts.

EU officials, who already pay reduced taxes and who are currently demanding free travel on public transport, will get the pay increase, with six months paid retrospectively, in time to celebrate the New Year.

I'm not nearly as phobic about Europe as many would expect and feel its a pity that the original concept of friendly nations trading freely and cooperating with each other in the common good – whilst maintaining national sovereignty - was rather a noble idea, but one that has unfortunately morphed into this uncontrollable, insatiable monster.

The ill-conceived common currency was always bound to fall victim to financial difficulty at some point, especially in the absence of a unified EU budget and tax raising powers.

It seems that the global financial difficulties currently being seen have finally revealed the weakness in the Euro zone, however the thing that concerns me most is the likelihood that 'Brussels' will attempt to make a power-grab, in these uncertain times, in a desperate attempt to sustain the Euro and to consolidate their intention to be the main arbiters of power within the member states and not the sovereign governments of each nation.

Finally, referring to V’s comment about fiscal responsibility, I would have thought that this was an alien concept to those at the top table.

That's rather an astounding sum - does anyone know what we get in return?
