Decimalisation Maybe the biggest Con Ever
« on: 25 June 2010, 22:39:20 »

Following on from this thread.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1277391784/all

On Monday 15 February 1971

Common name       Amount       New £p
Halfpenny               1[ch8260]2d.       5[ch8260]24p
Penny               1d.               5[ch8260]12p [ch8776] 0.417p
Threepence       3d.               1+1[ch8260]4p
Sixpence               6d.               2+1[ch8260]2p
Shilling               1/-               5p
Florin               2/-               10p       20¢
Half crown       2/6               12+1[ch8260]2p
Crown               5/-               25p       50¢
Half sovereign        10/-       50p
Sovereign                £1               £1

What did it cost me?

Wellat the start of 1971 choclate white mice cost me 1/2d each and weighed it at ? maybe 1oz. 1/2 oz not sure

So in weight per £

£1             = 20/- (Shillinga)
1 Shilling   = 12d

so 12d x 20/- =240

the 240d (pennies) x 2 (halfpenny) = 480 1 oz white mice.

so in the start of 1971 my £1 bought me 480 white mice

480 ounces of chocolate.

Decimal curreny came out.

100 pennies
200 halfpennys

later in life the halfpanny was scrapped as it has no value and is actually worth more than it's own weight as scrap.

You do the sums on the white mice - I think we got conned.  :-/

I said that from the start, you have £1.00 which was worth 140d, that is pennies, devalued to 100 pence, that is pennies, and this happened overnight...only advantage is that it made sums easier...... ::)
