I don't think decimalisation was the principal reason for the hyper-inflation of the 1970s, although it certainly contributed to the problem.  There were other reasons why a 6d choccy bar ended up costing 6p (or 14.4d in old money - one and tuppence ha'penny, near enough).

And not all Cockneys talk like that, and certainly not all Londoners.  My late father was born within the sound of Bow Bells, and he spoke like a BBC announcer.  But that might have been because he went to a public school. :)

I was a pre-decimal baby, brought up on old pennies and florins and the like --- to this day I still convert back to "visualise" the value of something  ::)

My brother is 10 years the younger and was educated post-decimalisation. When he was little he would squander his pock on, say, a lolly that cost 5 pence (an expensive brand cost that in those days). When I told him it was a waste of his money to buy the expensive lolly he'd say " but .. it's only 5 p", I'd reply, "5p ? Do you realise thats a whole shilling for a lolly ??? " ...... His response .... "What's a shilling ??"

I felt old at a very early age  :-/ :-/

Yes, it does, Lizzie.  I usually do it when I am trying to talk myself out of buying something I might want but don't need  ::) ::)
