1961 king george shilling is worth a bit, very rare apparently. i remember my dad used to collect them but never found one.

I would imagine it is extremely rare - like hen's teeth or rocking horse poo.

The last King George we had died in 1952. :)

Slightly off topic, but this thing about us all having some old coinage or notes of UK or indeed any other currency.

I saw a snippet on UK TV about one type of £20 note that is going out of circulation soon (end of this month I believe). Now you can go to a bank or B/S for a few weeks to change them and thereafter only by personal visit to the Bank of England (who will honour them in perpetuity).

There are apparently £3,000,000  worth still in circulation .  ;D ;D ;D ;D I wonder how many are under peoples mattresses!!

I don't think decimalisation was the principal reason for the hyper-inflation of the 1970s, although it certainly contributed to the problem.  There were other reasons why a 6d choccy bar ended up costing 6p (or 14.4d in old money - one and tuppence ha'penny, near enough).

And not all Cockneys talk like that, and certainly not all Londoners.  My late father was born within the sound of Bow Bells, and he spoke like a BBC announcer.  But that might have been because he went to a public school. :)

Seemingly a lost art among the current crop of BBC talent.

My most treasured coin is a 1873 third of a farthing, and when I last looked in VGC, which it is, it is worth c. £100 ;) ;)

It has to be said all the same that we had a very exotic range of coinage at one time when you consider the likes of the 3d bit, the little silver sixpence and the satisfyingly large half-crown.

Along Zulu with the "silver joey", the silver round 3d piece, the florin, the shilling, the lovely large penny, the half penny, the farthing, and third of a farthing :-* :-* :-* :-*

In earlier times, Lizzie, we had young and eager taste buds -- has the black jack changed, or has our sense of taste !?

Same applies, I feel, to bacon ----- modern stuff tastes nothing like it used to!
