Whaling - why do Japan ect want to?
« on: 26 June 2010, 10:44:19 »

I have never understood this in the modern age.

Why do industrial countries want to hunt them?

BTW my answer to the issue is this!

Big business.

When you see how much the Japanese wholesalers charge for whole tuna to be made into sushi etc.

I agree though it is yet another example of mans stupidity toward the environment. I am with Greenpeace and Friends of the earth on this one.

PS I recognise that bit of rock behind that sub!!

yep, i think we as a race on this planet really need to grasp the fact that many whales are being commercially hunted to extinction - it'll be embarrassing explaining that to the grandkids  :(

I do not think it is only that Tunnie, although it must feature in the argument!! ::) ::)

No it is the Japanese appetite for fish generally, and whale products in particular.  They love the taste of whale meat and use whale oil, along with, as I understand, other whale produce.  The last thing they generally care about is the numbers of whales in the oceans, as I have read they believe there are still plenty of at least one species (cannot remember which one! :-[ :-[)

It is just like us and cod which we (and I personally!!) love to eat no matter what the scientists tell us about numbers left in the sea!  We love beef, pork, lamb, etc, but the Japanese love whales and other sea life.  The difference is of course we farm trout, beef, pork, lamb, etc, but the Japanese have not, and perhaps cannot, started to farm whales!!

In short the international world has the task of persuading the Japanese to stop eating whale as in Britain we have been forced to cut back on eating cod! :'( :'( ;) A whole nations 'habit' has got to be changed ::) ::) :D :D ;)

Not just the Japs but Norwegians and Icelanders too. Not an easy task as we (well some people anyway) have been trying for many many years to get an all out ban.

It's obviously a culture thing. No doubt a few of our customs seem abhorrent to the Japanese. They like to watch a game of football, have a chat and go home. We like to smash up town centres and spend the night in hospital/jail. ;D
