Things progressing very quickly on flat purchase, time to look at Utility suppliers! 

Got these from U-Switch:

So with the first two, prices drop the more you use, where as EDF & nPower you pay a flat fee for the year, but then a much lower rate for electric and gas to start with.

Now its going to be 1 bed flat, in a 1930's building with concrete walls and floors, so no thin false walls. I can't see me using much gas for heating, if any most of the year. Only time be used it for boiler for hot water.

I'll run a few IT gadgets, but not excessive amounts (TV,xbox,Mac,Windows PC,Laptop,HiFi,Sky)

Is it best to go for one with the standing charge or without on my usage?  :-/

If you really care that much it's spreadsheet time.  And I would recommend trying to get some figures out of the previous tenant if possible to give an idea of need.

trouble is i have no idea how much or how little i will use, previous tent is a couple + baby so they useage is going to be way higher than me

Personally, i wouldnt bother too much about it to start with......just go with who already supplies the flat.

See how much you use after your first bill, then compare suppliers, leccy will remain fairly constant over the year, tad more during the winter months, but you will use more gas during the winter.

For an accurate picture, you should really give it 12months.....you dont say if the kitchen has gas or leccy hob/cooker.....that will make a difference...unless you plan to live on takeaways

Having worked for a major gas/elec company, they all have there pro's n cons, and there always out to win everybody over by promising low rates, then when ur with them they go up! Only way to secure it is wait till the prices come right down and sign up with sum1 for fixed rates, so u pay the same price if they decide later to up them.

Also, no standing charge is usually optional and for people who have very low or little usage in the property, for example if the place is gunna be empty for a while, usually if u take off the standing charge then the rates go up! so be carefull.

Another thing, always get the meter read when u move into a new property and then ring in or update online every 3 months or so, otherwise u get "estimated" bills through which people just ignore and pay when in fact u could have used alot less!!

Anyway hope this info helps.

ive been with southern electric for years for gas and electric on prepay, havent used the gas since xmas so only costing me £8 a week now, my boiler stays hot for 3 days then i switch on again. i had £6 left on there on saturday and theres still £3 left on the meter

 N-POWER total A-Holes had twice times in the past been messed about now repaying a £1200 leccy bill because of them to scottish gas

Have a nosy round Martins Money site, He was on TV last year and basicaly explained that what you save on one area you pay back in another.

As mentioned stick with the current suppliers and montitor your own monthly usafe.

If you go back to my thread about my Eon bill Entwood explained how the Eon pricing works.  My current leccy tarrif is.

Normal primary units used 1 kWh at 21.57p each 0.22
Normal secondary units used 0 kWh at 9.51p each 0.00

Also make sure there is nothing outstanding when you take over as Eon in particular wont start billing you untill they are paid up in full at that address, Mine has took ages to sort out with them on leccy but straight forward on gas.

Get a comboi fitted, only heats the water as you use it.

Boiler was fitted in 2007 got no idea what kind it is though

I was hounded for two years by BG when I moved here.  Simply the new suppliers forgot to change me across and they must have done some horse-trading without involving me.  BG tried to bill me for interim and I refused.  Got a file with about 20 threats of court action, cutting off etc.  Will never knowingly go back to them.
