If I were him, I would take it back on completion of the hire period and say "This happened while it was parked up. It had nothing to do with me. Bet you've never heard that one before."

I work for Enterprise and your not going to like my answer tbh. If they are anything like the people in our place then it will get noticed. We are told to pull cars off obstructions 'just in case' the customer is pulling a fast one.

Your mate obviously wont get charged the full cost of a car and there is no reason why that would ever happen, even if it was a total loss. The max we charge is £600 excess. Thats why we offer customers the chance of a zero excess, usually for about £5 per day. Most people dont take it and are glad they dont when they bring an undamaged car back, but then theres the unfortunate people like your mate!

In my opinion, its up to your mate how bad the damage is. If bad i'd get it repaired a bit sharpish, but If it would pass a cursory inspection once it had been t-cut, polished and driven through some dirty puddles and left facing forward in their car park then i'd risk it.

My wife borrowed a Merc C Class with AMG alloys the other night and kerbed the front wheel within 25 minutes, luckily it was me who signed it back in!!!
