Yeah, black ice.I remember the first time I encountered it in the sixties.I was driving down the East Lancs road (the main drag in those days) from Manchester towards Liverpool early one bitterly cold pitch black morning ,heading for Birkenhead market where I traded every Wednesday. The road was four lanes in those days, two each way, with only a white line seperating oncoming traffic.
I was trundling along about 50mph in my Thames 15 cwt van when I realised something was different but couldn't figure what .But when my brother said something along the lines of'The van seems quiet this morning' I realised I couldn't hear any noise from the normally loud tyres.
Just then the truck in front started to jack knife and then it dawned on me that we were on a ice rink.I hit the brakes which locked instantaniously and left us sliding towards the truck at undiminished speed, with no seatbelts and just a bit of 22 guage tin between us and and the full force of the impact.
I thought ''dangle berries' to this 'and released the brakes and headed for the grass verge. The van turned and then the arse end swung out and we did a 180 degree slide, bounced over the kerb and came to a halt out of harms way on the verge. Phew! The guy behind me slid his F*rd zodiac into the truck I'd managed to miss and then all hell broke loose.By this time we were out of the van and watching as cars and trucks smashed into each other. The noise of vehicles colliding is a violent ,almost shocking sound and we could hear it going on out of sight down the road for what seemed like ages.
When it got light, the scene was one of absolute carnage. 65 vehicles of all shapes and sizes, looking like a gruesome scrapyard .Two died and scores were maimed and injured all in a few minutes.
Black ice -THE most dangerous road condition of them all
