So why not agree on some basic code words so to speak,  tinker has been a common one whilst I have been on the forum, I use bugga a lot and maybe a handfull more should suffice, and if sorted and agreed then applied to a sticky and adhered to.

But think back, Steve left as the swearing thing was flaring up, the forum calmed down, he comes back  - now look at the forum, all swearing again, Maybe it's all Steve's fault.  ;D ;D

What do you mean maybe..........?

Personally i dont mind swearing, its life, but a clear and concise message with policing would be the best way forward to stop this matter raising its head again and again

How do you do that, though? The point I was trying to make is that, in most cases, context is important, so it's not about a list of words, it's about how they are used.

I could have sprinkled a few expletives in the above sentence and it would have been over the top in the context. Had the sentence been about my car throwing a rod on the way home from work, or a joke, then perhaps the same words would have added something useful to the meaning. Had it been a rant at another member it could have been considered offensive....

Kevin

But to an outsider like me isnt it as easy as Skruntie says?

That is to post up a sticky with acceptable swear words or plays on swear words then implementing a "3 strikes" policy to keep us all in check......?

There doesnt seem to be anything up to clearly define what is and isnt acceptable, and if the rules arent clear and enforced, people will push as far as they can......

Got to agree with the general theme of Kevin's ditty here .......
Striking and implementing the right 'balance' is often a difficult task for our Admins.

We've got to have guidelines, and let us not forget that this is a 'public' site.
(And an excellent one at that!).

But thats not the system so to speak it's a particular type of person.  Hence guidlines and that kind of person will try to step outside of them to be awkward or prove a point.

I know i started this post off but you may as well delete it. Everybody's idea of which word is offensive in whatever context it is used will differ. Why say break when we all know it means opps...sorry but a beep or asterisk covers what we know it really says & how the *****heck are the admins supposed to please everyone?
I suppose the over sensitive can't help it & 99% of us must pander to them. Unless i'm told different i'll continue not to swear or say break Or *** even if others do. ::)

Generally the forum strikes a reasonble balnce, and if we are all honest the odd swear word is only used to understand someones mood, like today for example, richierich thinks he may get stung regards his wages, I would expect selective swear words somewhere in his conversation.

But the use of swear words and name calling in the STMO thread could be argued either way - Yes it was a bit of fun, but after a few weeks with out It I did'nt enjoy as I personally felt it was OTT

You're confirming my thoughts Guy!

It's a pretty difficult task for the Admins in trying to strike the right balance here.

Any word used in an offensive way is out of order, as are a lot of direct swear words. and as you say guy, the asterick just blanks out the word, none of us are thick so in a way thats just bad.
