Got me thinking ... is there any music you only play when "on your own" ??

Mrs E is of the opinion that Leonard Cohen is "music to slit your wrists by" so I only play those when she is out ...

likewise.. she is a Stevie Wonder fan and I can't stand him ... ( that "Secret World of Plants thing .. just what is that ? .. it's certainly NOT music !!! ) so she waits 'til I'm out ..

We do have a great deal of common likes  ....   Moody Blues, Beach Boys, Big Band Swing being just a few..

Anyone else have similar "no go" collections ??

certainly do! I guess I like quite a range of music, but the one genre  the better half doesnt like is when I put any blues guitar stuff on (buddy guy/clapton/SRV/otis rush etc). As for mr cohen, guess he is a tad maudlin, though I  always liked "Suzanne "and Buckleys moving version of "hallelujah" is a classic.

Yes, anything heavier than "easy listening".

Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zep,  etc..

I could list plenty that I have to listen to on my own without someone (her or kids) moaning "What crap you listening to now".

However, there is one album I have to listen to in complete silence, either on my own or with headphones on. To try and listen to it with background noise or any other form of distraction is just wrong, and it it also my favourite album of all time:

Filigree & Shaow - This Mortal Coil

Not really a band but an amalgamation of bands, and music that is really hard to describe so is best listened to.

I think I can confidently say that the majority of stuff I listen to prompts my wife to close the door to the room where I'm listening to it.

I do have a very broad taste in music so it can be difficult to choose a genre that 'gets' to me - they all do.

 
However, in those moments when I'm alone thinking about things away from materialistic foibles of this experience we call life, I keep coming back to music like this;

Not for overtly religious reasons, more for its substance and suggestion that there is something else, something altogether greater that needs to be recognised and appreciated.

Some good forgotten 80's Tracks on there though.

Strangely, our tastes are similar so there is no known clash. 

I've been bought several 'Air Guitar' albums at her instigation and I only get ribbed when the vases start to move on their own!

That in the face of Paolo Nutini being the current favourite!

I have to say that, while I do have many favourites from the 1970s & 1980s, and my daughter has introduced me to the likes of Pixie Lott and Lady GaGa, I do tend to listen to classical music rather a lot these days. One of the reasons is that I find I can concentrate on my work much easier when classical music is on in the background.

Then again, I have been responsible for hiring the RPO on a couple of occasions, so maybe that helped convert me.

Fortunately, none of my family complain about me having classical on and my 5-year old even started  singing along to a choral piece from Karl Jenkins' Armed Man album the other day. Quite shocked me!

Yep. I had a good friend in the fiddle section. He's since married and moved to the States.
