Oxfordshire - Speed Cameras
« on: 28 July 2010, 00:14:30 »

http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/8288341.Speed_cameras_to_be_switched_off/

What do we all think? As someone who lives in Oxfordshire, I've obviously got an opinion...but interested as to what others think.

I made the following comments a few days ago and have to say that my opinion remains unchanged.

Where cameras are used to generate funds for central/local government/partnerships, I certainly understand how many would consider this to be welcome news

If, however, cameras are removed from points where they're genuinely placed for reasons of a safety initiative, and to identify drivers who blatantly ignore the posted speed limit subsequently putting that initiative in peril, then it's a bad thing.

In either case, it's ultimately a bad thing if other measures are not put into place to help control the tendency for people to drive at inappropriate speeds at various points on the road network.

Swindon removed theirs some time ago. Result? No change in accident rates.

The money for cameras (£600k in Oxford's case), would be better spent on a couple of Plod in a jam sandwich....

..they could use the change to fill in some of the bl**ding pot holes still eating away at a lot of the A roads around this neck of the woods  >:(. Lane 1 ( I know this might be unchartered territory for some  ::)) of the M40 between J9 & J8/8a is appalling..

Public opinion. Ffs these things where considered the scourge of the roads initially, we're not now saying we want to keep the bloody things surely?

Apart from anything else I haven't seen I live one for bloody ages.

They're up to something. Why has most of the motorway network seemingly been dug up recently to put in comms infrastructure? It's not just for those gay signs that sit there and (wrongly, most of the time) say it's 12 miles and 13 minutes to the next junction, or patronisingly tell you to take a break (if ever there's anything more likely to prompt me to press on for the hell of it).

Nope. We're in for something far worse as a replacement cash-extraction mechanism, I fear.
