Sky price increase,
« on: 26 July 2010, 20:02:20 »

Hi everyone, had an e mail from sky today stating that they would increase my DD by £1,from next month due to their increasing expences.
So I decided to phone them up and cancel,so guess what happened!,they gave me a discount of 25% for the next 12 months.
Now that was unexpected.
Alfie.

There's been a lot of noise on the A/V forums concerning this increase, the change in the HD package charges and the forthcoming price increase at the end of the year when the VAT hike comes into force.

It seems that a lot of people are considering pulling the plug on the service or reducing their package commitment.  Whether or not they follow through with the threat is yet to be seen.

Whats changing there.

I am also disapointed that we dont get Bravo HD.  I watch TNA Wrestling which is now broadcast in HD, sadly the quality on SD is totally naff now.  :-/

Presently the (per box) £10 monthly charge entitles the subscriber to receive all the non premium (movies, sports)  HD channels.

From October the ability to view a channel in HD will be linked to the subscription package - so if a subscriber elects to have one package, say the style and culture pack, they will see the HD channels on that but not the others - as they presently do.  This will still cost £10.  Other packages can be added at any time (at extra cost).

It remains unclear how any additional/existing HD channels that are simulcast from free to view channels such as BBC1 HD, ITV HD, CH4 HD and so on will be charged for.

If you take the top tier subscriptions however it appears that there will be effectively no change, other than the 'normal' Autumn price rise.

They cant help themselves can they.

£10 for the HD chennels is bad enough, but that now means they are taking channels off us, or are they, have I got that right or wrong.

In terms of HD viewing for the £10 subscription you will only be viewing HD on the subscription packages you actually pay for - or additional packages you elect (and pay) to receive.

If you don't pay for a particular package then you wouldn't be able to view either SD or HD content.

The loss comes into it where the subscriber has the HD subscription entitling him/her to view all the non premium HD output but takes only one package.  All HD from the packages not subscribed to will be 'lost'

If the subscriber is within the minimum contract period at the time of change, and doesn’t take the full array of packages, they will have to contact Sky and ask them to leave the HD channels presently in the HD package line-up connected.

At the end of the contract period however should a subscriber wish to continue to receive all the HD output they’re getting up to that point (in the current HD package) then they will have to buy more packages.

At best then I drop the HD subscription as they dont offer enough value anyway.

At worst, I drop sky full stop.  as they are taking the wee wee.

They get stupid in the ammount of money they pay for sports rights - ok I can see the need to charge an extra fee for sports, but not only that it is also partly passed on to all subscribers.

Seems rather nasty to me, if you just want the HD channels - tough.

However DSO terrestrial trannsmitters now doing HD, and with Freesat HD I think Sky need to play VERY carefully.

Alright for you to moan about Sky increases.
I am a treasurer of a Social Club which is in a Community Centre, and have been pressurised into getting Sky. A total joke !!!!! They supply on a Public viewing licence, and want £8640 per year from us. Bear in mind, our room is about 50' by 17' max and is open to members only.
Because the Centre has a rateable value of £15,000, they want us to pay on that rating, irrespective of our tiny part within.
So they can poke it where the sun don't shine  :y :y

In theory it's a complete con :-X, why because currently in terms of movies I have seen them already, sports do not watch, all other channels are reapeats aswell :-X, so yes why pay 40 quid a month I ask myself when I even hardly watch Sky ::)
