We have all done it.

Driving another car/van/waggon when there is no fear of fallout if it breaks - hire cars, company cars, vans, trucks and the like.

Whats the worst/most expensive/amusing thats passed through your palms??

In my previous job, we used to get 'demonstrator' Police vehicles that, frankly, had the absolute tits ragged off them - engine, brakes, suspension etc - knowing full well thats just what the manufacturer and the fleet manager expected.  And it saved one of ours being on the receiving end for a while!

Assorted Senators, Omega's, Beemers, Fords, Subaru's et al were, simply, fair game.  If they were expected to last the pace as a 'working' car well, you had to ensure their suitability to all and every situation?

It makes me laugh when someone purports a car to be a former Police Demonstrator/Accident Investigator/Senior Officer vehicle and thus, one step away from pristine!

Eeeeehhhh.  Nnaaaaawww!!

A Montenogo 2.0 when I worked at Alstom.

Gave it hell and when doing 80 down the M6 the gearbox seized and self destructed.

Did all contents - mechanical and humanoid  - remain in the vehicle??

Err....sort of.

Gearbox was many pieces in the fast lane, oil was decorating the passenger side of the car and the engine served no greater purpose than to drive the alternator and steering!

I was fine all be it a little shocked!

There was the time when the hire car company we used double booked one of the cr@ppy Mk3 Escrots I used to end up with for customer visits.

Imagine the scene. 23 Year old gets given the hire car company boss' Rover 827 to get to his appointment in Telford instead. In a forgotten time when you could max such a car out for most of the length of the M54 and probably get away with it.

Somebody else's car means somebody else's problem on the whole, even with the best of intentions.

Crikey.  When I was a Van driver!!!!!

As the company insisted on Peugeot Boxers/Citroen Relay's, needless to say, they were in the main-dealers 8 days of the week, leaving me with 'courtesy vans' to play with.

Too lazy to brake?  Just hit 2nd gear at 80mph and you'll slow down.

Too lazy to change gear?  No problem, drive 100 miles along the M4 in 4th...... it's 78mph afterall.... just think of it as a 'speed limiter'.

Too lazy to take the handbrake off?  Yep!  Considering it is on my right hand side, and so low down I have to lean down to reach it (I'm 6ft tall) it can stay on.... the shoes will burn out soon enough!

Never crashed one though, and even though we are all supposed to crash a hire/rental/lease car, I dont fancy it.

when i worked at mfi a long time ago a new manager came he was indian and sat me down and siad im the same as you laddy only different skin but you can call me sir,shortly after he asked me to go to a customers with adrwaer front and passed me his car keys so every time i set off foot to floor redline and bang clutch out iscrewed that car silly,i knew a lad in the mill who when a new sales rep came threw his car keys at him and said park my car so down came the pants and poop hole went all over the gear knob

mine was fubar being repared. Non fault, so i got a hire bike, Honda firestorm, almost new v twin and totaly gay.

, ground them off and half the footpeg as well. Suspension was set rock hard, somebody played with it previously i suspect, so the tyre span on the power over bumps buggering the tyre and leave scores around the middle, Fettled a bit to allow above.
 They got it back with fubar tyres, half both pegs missing, a blown fork seal, blue discs and the chain almost dragging on the floor.

Took it well i thought, Hondas build quality still shining through.

Without doubt the best and the most exciting car I have had on loan was the Merc E320 CDi, which I pushed to the limit in some fun situations 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-).  The only downside was a auto box that when travelling in slow moving traffic sometimes refused to change up when the road cleared!

The most interesting cars were a 1950 Humber Supersnipe where all gear changes were undertaken using double de-clutch, and without power steering, that I partially learn't to drive in, along with a 1928 Bullnose Morris where every gear change was a real effort, even with double de-clutch!

Had an engine drop out of an Ital van.  I'd seen too many films, and thought it was going to blow, what with petrol everywhere (carb had hit suspension turret on way down, snapped it off).  Nothing so dramatic though.

I blew a citroen c15 van up in the morning and 4 hours later blew a vauxhall/renault hire van up coming back up the m40 near gaydon....Transport manager gave the next day off citing no spare vans so take a day off with full pay.....
