Do you think i'm mad?
« on: 15 August 2010, 18:46:58 »

Right i have a 2.2 CD,which i love :y Now i love this car in particular and it is a good un....
I'd love an Elite,so i was thinking if i got a 3.0 Elite with, say poor body work but decent mechanics, i would strip it down and strip mine down at the same time and swap all the Elite stuff part by part to mine thus making it an Elite, but would still be the car i love only improved.

I cant really justify having 2 Omega's, i.e a 2.2 daily driver and an Elite as a toy....plus my 2.2 only does on average 22 mpg and the other 2 3.0 Elite's i know do the same mpg, so i'd be aswell running it than the 2.2.
I know i then need to take it to be reclassified and sort the V5 etc

What do you all think?

Just buy an Elite lol

A lot of time and money but I don't see why not if you love your car so much.

Just don't smash it up the first day you take it out when it is all done up.  :-[

Seems like a lot of hard work to me, and I doubt for one minute that getting the vehicle reclassified is going to be a walk in the park.
As Road Hog Mad says,it will be a lot easier and cheaper to buy an Elite and go from there.

Vx didnt make a 2.2 Elite, so trying to make a 2.2 Elite is going to be very time comsuming, as quite a few of the wiring looms will be missing.
For example, a 2.2 doesnt have the wiring loom for the HID headlights, thats going to tricky to put one in.

I think you'd be better off either buying an Elite V6 or putting in some off the easy toys, like cruise control, auto dipping rear view mirror, etc.

Also if you did manage to make a 2.2, Elite spec, it wouldnt need to be reclassified, it would just be a 2.2 with a lot of extras fitted.  :y

You take it to a VOSA MOT test centre(Where you take Truck & Buses)
Show them the work you have done and the V5 doc from my own plus the one used as a donor, mine gets re certified and the V5 from the Elite donor gets 'scrapped'

I know there was never a 2.2 Elite and as for the loom,i would be transplanting the whole loom from an Elite to my car so the 'new' 3 litre engine would work, therefore nothing will be missing
If you change the engine, either bigger or smaller, once it has been approved the log book is changed to the new engine size
Dont know if the spec is changed or not

Sell the 2.2. If it's good enough for you to love then it'll sell. Just fitting an Elite Bose system in my MV6 involved stripping the interior (was upgrading to leather at the same time) so all the other electics involved would be daunting to say the least.
    Mad? I would'nt go that far but.....!!!!!! :D :y

fair enough.  :-X

You're here because you love your car! if you have the money and time then do it, then post us some pics. You be the only person I am pretty sure to have a 2.2 Elite! and if it is reclassified it is genuine right? so it might be worth something it the future? as a one off.

I love my car too, I am here to save money and to improve which I have. Always wanted cruise control and the guide and 40 minutes of my time worked a treat.

Go for it.

The engine size regarding re registering has been mentioned but you may need an engineers report. Also you will either have to lie to your ins. co or delare alot of mods. Despite being standard Elite spec it still won't be a standard car. :-/

There are certainly pro's an cons,i certainly wouldn't go into it lightly

I am a mecahnic to trade, and i have bare shell stripped and refitted Monza's Senator's and Carlton's etc so i know what i am in for...

It would be far easier to buy an Elite, but i like to do things different :D
It would be the only 3.0 Elite with no sunroof! ;D

Sorry, ive reread your original post, and rereading you want to swap the engine as well.....as you said, this will need reclassifying with VOSA....

Tho i still think your a brave man to try to make a 2.2 shell into a 3.0 Elite. Good luck tho, if you go for it  :y

I wonder if that amount of work, and a VOSA reclassification, would lead to a "Q" plate ?? If so I see insurance being a very major problem/expense after the work is complete...   :(
