Another i-phone type query
« on: 22 August 2010, 22:53:00 »

My mobile has been out of contract for a while and now looking for a potential replacement.

As some of you know, I travel up and down the country on a reasonably regular basis and as such, would like a good mapping facility.  Not neccessarily TomTom as I have a setup already with traffic master and such, but thinking OS survey mapping.

I also engage in something called geocaching (Hiya TD and others) so would like something that could also cover this without taking a seperate GPS device as its not always loaded with the info I need for a last minute journey.

Also like the idea of an MP3 player or i-pod type device.

You can see where this is heading....

Is the latest incarnation of i-phone worth the effort or is there something out there that will do the above without the potential grief that cutting edge technology can sometimes bring?

Comments (reasonable, repeatable!) welcomed...v ;)

Me and one of my sons have the iPhone 4. Worth every penny, the new display on this model is fantastic. I'd say get one to be honest :y

...if The Boy has one, all be it an older model, over and above his beloved winDOH!s mobile, and despite his derogatory remarks about crapple on here, then I think it's time to admit it's the best option at the moment....?

Anything else is full of bugs, nokia, phoney ericsson, struggling.

Google seems the only other option, no experience with them though, or the geo thing mentioned.

Fact is, apple works, and simply, just does. Flash issues aside of course. Another topic for Newent no doubt.

Flash is rubbish on any platform though. With a bit of luck web authors will stop plastering it all over the place soon, when they realise a good proportion of us hit the "back" button as soon as we see the tell tale CPU load maxxing out. ;D

Just to add, I have iPad, same os as iPhone 3G. It is faultless on oof, handles the small page buttons surprisingly well for big fingers on a, admittedly bigger, touch screen. And it's quick, very quick via wifi.

To be fair, my SE 905 has been a good phone.  Good reception, almost always a signal. Easy web use (albeit Opera) just the mapping and sounds that let it down TBH.

has to be iPhone for needs you list, go for a 3G-S, there will be loads on fleabay at the moment, just upgrade it to OS-4.

I run a SatNav called n-Drive only cost a fiver, works ok, full turn by turn sat nav, and lane assist. For tinernet browsing iPhone has it licked for ease of use, Flash support is an issue, but some flast files a huge anyway and take ages to download.

I've had my company one for about months now, love it!

TV-Catchup is a worth while app/link, Freeview TV on iPhone for free  :)

Good camera, but I get the impression other Sony erricsons struggle to truly understand the concept of multitasking, the whole point of a smartphone as I understand it. Juggling tom-tom, texts ,phone calls, oofing  on the move etc without closing the applications involved?

Old Iphone gets round multitasking by remembering where it was when last closed, so not true multitasking I would suggest, iphone4 is said to embrace mt fully afaik, therefor it wins if so, for me anyway.

N900 multitasks well, can see all apps running in their minimised widows, videos and satnav running away in the back ground, it copes well with loads of stuff open at once, p,ss poor browser with dialogue boxes though, can't recommend it sadly  >:( :'( it likes the news on here, not! As I'm sure you'll recall  ::)

Not sure if the gayphone can do the memory map stuff tbh so winmo could be your best option.
Tomtom, os maps/atoz, google maps and a shed load of other gps stuff all running on mine with the built in gps.

I recently acquired a SE W995 which is anything but a smartphone.

But it's got all the bells and whistles you coud want, apart from a touch screen or a Qwerty keypad.  Wi-fi works well, but internet use is a pain without a proper keypad, and the screen's a bit small.  It's got GPS, too, and there's a SatNav application, although I haven't tried that - I think you may have to pay for it.

It's a Walkman model, so good music facilities, and there's an 8Gb memory card included.  And there's an 8.1Mp camera.  And stereo speakers.

Best of all, it was a free upgrade. :)

It has to be an android phone for your needs.

The iphone offers nothing extra other than a higher price tag.

I have just got the Nokia N97 mini and have found it to be excellent.
Qwerty keyboard, good size screen, 8Gig of built in memory with card slot to increase
The Nokia Sat Nav is also very good as well and best of all its free :y
