Look at the various options at Newent.

Memory Map on Windows works very well, OS maps on crApple rely on internet connectivity (the ones I've seen).  But Win 6.5 is dead, Win7 not out, and not backwards compat. 2 reasons I gave up with Windows Mobile - 1) HTC are about only manufacturers, 2) dead technology.

Symbian is a has been, too expensive for OEMs to implement. Doubt it will be mainstream for much longer.

Android is fast going the same ay as Symbian, according to analysts, Google currently publically stating they will not change their OEM agreements.  Has potential if they could get a decent OEM behind it, as HTC have lost their way.  Later versions don't work well with current OOF, due to browser bug.  There are alternate browsers though.

Gooseberry, only any good for corporates, individuals should avoid like the plague.

crApple. It does exactly what it says. Perfectly.  Accept for 2 mojor bombshells:
1) Signal strength for phone is abysmally bad in weak areas.  I can not emphasize that enough.
2) Its Apple, and Apple are 10,000,000 times worse than Microsoft for wanting to rule your life, and enforcing their way upon you.
3) Gay

You are welcome to have a play with a gayPhone at Newent.  Your son has recent Android to play with, no other choices really....

has to be iPhone for needs you list, go for a 3G-S, there will be loads on fleabay at the moment, just upgrade it to OS-4.

I run a SatNav called n-Drive only cost a fiver, works ok, full turn by turn sat nav, and lane assist. For tinernet browsing iPhone has it licked for ease of use, Flash support is an issue, but some flast files a huge anyway and take ages to download.

I've had my company one for about months now, love it!

TV-Catchup is a worth while app/link, Freeview TV on iPhone for free  :)
Why stick iOS 4 on it? iOS4 offers jack schmit over iPhone OS3.1

nDrive is now £30. Poor value compared to more established ones.

Os3.1 doesn't have folders which helps organise all your apps etc and also many new apps will only work on the newer os.  8-)

Hardly a must-have feature, certainly not worth the hassle if you have older phones...

Get in quick, many analysts are giving Android 18 months ;)

I too know people who work at the Carphone Whorehouse, but would I be cynical enough to say that they promote Android due to better margins, and better stock availability  :-X

I believe Android did outsell the crApple gayPhone for 2 months over the summer in the US. Some analysts say this is due to them being sick of crApple's closed systems.

I wouldn't dare suggest which phone is best, all have strengths and weaknesses. Horses for courses.  Best phone I ever had was a Nokia 6190.... ;)

My TP wasn't shiney after I was done with it. It had been bounced off walls too many times. A classic example of what went wrong with HTC

It ain't too bad, the occasional random lock up or going away with the faries excepted.
At least it doesn't hard reset when the battery goes flat like 2003 did.

LOL, pre WM5, windows mobile was unusable due to that issue with flat batteries ;D

One thing I will have to say about the gayPhone, Mrs TheBoy has had hers since November, and its never, ever crashed/glitched/thrown a rod. It does simply just do what it says on the tin...

...still gay though ;D

This is it for me, bugs, apple afaict, release a far far more finished product. Nokia Insist on turning out so many phones they can't possibly de bug it prior to release. To the point that 5 or 6 firmware updates later and it's still not sorted, by which time to opposition have moved on and nokia themselves have released 2 or 3 other phones. Rubbish.

Apple have one phone and continually work to improve that one phone. The 3GS now replaced by the 4. Hence they kick nokias arse, and others to a lesser extent, seems to me anyway. Apples signal bug aside of course, which does make me smile, poor Steve Jobs.

Remember, all gayPhones suffer from poor signal, not just the well publicised gayPhone 4 issue (which is unbelievably bad, yet crApple initially try to deny, then claim all smartphones suffer).

To see how back it is, next time you see a gayPhone 4, hold it normally, so you hand 'shorts out' 2 of the 3 metal sections of the case, and watch the signal strength drop over 30 - 45s (from full signal to no signal)
