Does oil come from fossils or not?
« on: 07 September 2010, 23:38:10 »

I see this theory has come to light again. Does oil come from fossils or is it mineral...and naturally renewable?

I've always thought it odd that so many dinosaurs died in specific places at depths of kilometres. :-?

What do you think? As per the thermodynamic thread, keep it pleasant and informative.  :y

it's mostly fossilized algae and plants, not dinosaurs  :y

Indeed, I was being a bit sarcastic about the dinosaurs, but I am still minded to question how come there is so much fossilised algae/plants in specific places and at such depths.

Must have been painful for you to visit BP's website. ;)  ;D

this says just reverse what they teach us in the school ;D

as far as I know fossil fuels are mostly from plant origin..(also its molecular structure prooves this )

however I remember I read about an experiment  (long time ago) which says (prooves) if you keep organic materials under high pressure and temp for some time (not centuries) you can get combustible substances :-?

Saw an experiment once with half a container full of fern and other plants talen from Bodmin Moor put in a machine that crushed wheelbarrow sized amounts with hundreds (?) of tons of pressure. the resulting "liquid" that came out of the bottom proved to be flammable. you only got a cupful of this "slush" from each wheelbarrow sized load, and after the whole lot was done, the amount extracted was maybe 1/4 gallon, but it was put in a container and lit with a bunsen burner, burning with a slightly coloured flame.

This leaves me to totally believe that oil came from flora and fauna compressed over thousands of years by the action of the earth COULD have "matured" the slush formed, and eventually made the crude oil we currently extract from the earth.

until some eminent scientist can prove to me differently, I will continue to believe this.

Natural Gas could be the fumes that come off when this process is done underground??
