M6 northbound crash today
« on: 09 September 2010, 22:29:20 »

Went to Manchester and back today - an accident in which 2 guys were killed on hard shoulder between j17 and 18 going North happened at 11.15 am and we went by there on way up about 30 mins before. On way up M6 a lorry started to veer into my lane - driver was texting when we went past.

This could not have been same lorry that crashed but it is ridiculous that people should take such risks.

Coming back of course with northbound closed and rubber necking going south it took a while as I had to bypass M6 south down to Alsager. Long day but terrible for families of the 2 guys. Lorry driver has been arrested.

I should have driven past it on my way up from Gloucester today....but there were that many signs well in advance, I took the M54 to telford and came up the A5 instead.

Blimey, thoughts for the families involved I suppose  :-/

I find it difficult as to what to say in these situations.

Blimey, I must have gone past again like you about 30mins at most before it happened.

A very sad incident indeed, and just emphasises what the police always say; the hard shoulder of a motorway is the most dangerous place to be.

Something I found out personally at 0105 approx. on the 25th December 2005!! :o :o

If I had a passenger I'd have got them to call the police. These bastards just kill people because of a text. There would have been no escape for him, his tachograph and phone records would have confirmed what he was doing and, hopefully, he would have lost his job.

It most certainly is!!  I used to work in the breakdown/recovery industry, down south covering a large section of M25 & M4 - and believe you me...the sights I used to see  :o :o :o !!! in fact over the years, i knew a couple of guys that got wiped out on the M4 :( I actually had on one occasion, attending a breakdown on the M4, was about to get in drivers door when I heard VERY loud and Fast approaching rumble strip ddrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise; i looked up and an artic was heading straight for us !!! :o :o - i had previously ( as always, ) told the driver to get into my cab to relative safety, while i just managed to dive clear !!!! ..... watching the artic NARROWLY missing the car, but taking CLEAN off the drivers mirror and arm, off my truck !!! - this obviously startled the lorry driver as he corrected/swerved back onto the lane, AND CARRIED ON!! (TOS**R) pphheeeeeewwww..... :o :o that was scary!!

You are right and later in the day regretted not having done so - I had a passenger but it happened quickly and of course we were going past him when she noticed him texting. Lesson learned perhaps.

Will be back up to Manchester again tonight returning Sunday - there has already been more nonsense at M6 J14 today. Hope it stays clear now.

I agree with this fully. I and probably all of you have seen acts of madness on motorways (and other places)....but what number do you ring... :-/

Surely not 999 !!!!!
Maybe there should be a number that you can ring in with to report these incidents that everybody would remember.
Are you allowed to report instances  on the Motorway Emergency phones ??? :)

No, because you can only stop on a motorway for an emergency or if you break down.  Seeing someone using their mobile does not constitute an emergency ;) ;)

In addition it is of no use reporting that you have seen someone using their mobile as you are not a police officer and as such cannot be part of any evidence to prosecute another driver.  They must be seen by a police officer using their mobile whilst driving for a successful prosecution. ;)

You can report another driver for dangerous driving and then mention he was using a mobile.....for the fussy thingies amongst us.

.......and all the police can do is record such a complaint for future knowledge if the police themselves have to pull that vehicle and its driver for further driving offences that they have witnessed. ;) ;)
