Trade Card & VeccyB Discs/Pads
« on: 02 May 2007, 13:20:53 »

Hi all,

I'm about to send off for one of those Trade Cards - how widely are they accepted amongst the stealers?  Anyone ever used them in Waltons, Stafford?

Cheers!

Just seen my brothers Vectra again last night, and found that the grating noise coming from the front wheel was due to paper thin brake pads and almost non-existant discs.  Frightening.  He only had an MOT about a fortnight ago as well...  should almost non-existant pads/discs be pulled up in MOT's or is it sufficient for them to just stop the car (even if it does sound nasty)?

Anyone point me to a decent veccyB disc/pad changing page anywhere (all sites considered  ::))

Exessive pad and or disc wear should be an mot fail. To drive a car with badly worn discs run the risc of the disc actually breaking up under heavy breaking resulting in total break failure :o I wouln't drive the car until its been fixed

Not so... the only thing that is tested is the current stopping power, if the car stops on the rollers as it should then it's a pass regardless of the pads or discs wear. The testing station can issue an advisory but not fail the car. The car can be failed on poor general condition e.g. corrosion, but as long as it meets the braking requirements on the roller it can not be failed for pads or discs wear. Strange but true....

Also they are not required to dismantle anything.  So if it were the outer pad/disk surface and it was not reasonably visible the wouldn't be expected to pick it up.

I would however have expected the last service to have dealt with it....

Might be worth trying www.lmfvauxhall.co.uk for Veccy B parts, I know Steve used to have loads of 'de mounted' parts direct from VX (from new cars that were upgraded to GSi's).

I've used these discs and pads before with no problems - they've literrally been on the car for a dozen wheel revolutions!

I've had an advisory for a worn set of brake pads before, and the tester said his opinion would be to fail it but he couldn't above a certain thickness and they measured slightly above that.

They needed changing, no mistake, but weren't what I'd consider dangerous. This MOT centre are reasonable, too, so it's not like they would be trying to get work out of it, or just being miserable.

I agree that if they can't see the pads, they can't fail it.

I suspect that cars have such a long service interval these days, if their owners bother, that they tend to ask themselves if it will last until the next MOT!

£57 incVat & delivery from Autovaux for Friday.  Hope I get some time off over this weekend to replace them...  if you see a purple Vectra in a hedge before the weekend around Stone then my brother (having been told to park it and wait) will be next to it, wishing he'd ordered them sooner...
