Well, well, well ....

Just on the local news .......In the period since turning off Swindon's speed cameras there have been 130 FEWER accidents than similar periods with cameras on. (Although there were 2 more fatals).

Makes you wonder how many accidents used to be caused by sudden pre-camera deceleration

What USED to happen was folks driving at speed, slamming on the brakes at the cameras, then speeding up again ... so causing accidents.

On the roads involved MOST traffic now drives at a constant speed - albeit slightly over the limit - with a few idiots racing around.

Although the FIXED cameras have been turned off, mobile cameras are still in use, and they do catch a fair few of the idiots.

Not ideal . but certainly better IMHO

The war against these contraptions will be won when the camera at the bottom of the M11 gets turned off.
It has been proven that accidents have increased at that site (for the above mentioned reasons) since its installation, but up to about a year ago it had taken over a million quid in fines iirc. ::)

The fatalities are of course horrific for the families concerned, but can anyone establish that they wouldnt have happened if the cameras were still operational ?

yep, some peoples driving is so bad that although they are not atually speeding, having spotted the bright yellow camera 5 feet infront.. insist on jammng on the brakes to 20mph.

when they first come out as mentioned they were positioned in places(behind signs) where the traffic moved more quickly. the reason the traffic moved more quickly is because there was no path, junction, school, crossing etc..

i dont understand the mentality of those who insist on setting a blaze the cameras in visable locations outside schools.

Couple those people with the even worse drivers who happen to be behind them and not looking ahead at all and you have lots of rear end shunts. :y
There was a terrible case a few years ago of a biker who braked approaching a camera and the driver behind didnt notice and ran into the back of him, killing him stone dead. :(

How much longer will Swindon Council live without the revenue the cameras created? I think it's time to s*** or get off the pot. Either the whole country does as Swindon has but still have traffic police or the whole country has average speed cameras on every road so it would be impossible to speed & get away wth it...unless you drive a high spec BMW/MERC on a recent plate in which case you must have some sort of exemption or not understand the word "average". Even us hated groups adhere...HGV, white van, caravan, repmobiles, bikers & all. Seems i'll have to get myself a huge fast German car....in black?

That was the point in turning them off, to save money  ;)
The money raised from the fines, goes straight to the government, it was costing SBC money to maintain them. SBC used to get a % back to help maintain them, then the government cut the payback, so SBC turned them off  ;)

Recently SBC have also turned off the 'red-light' cameras as well.
