Courrier quote
« on: 07 October 2010, 19:38:45 »

I am looking at getting a marine diesel engine down from Glasgow to Farnborough and I have been soliciting quotes.  £140 is the best I have got so far which seems a little steep.  The engine is 130kg and 800x40x75cm.

I feel it is too cheeky to get the OOF courrier service involved in this one due to the weight and distance so defo looking at a courrier.  Does anyone know of a service that may do a better price?

I had a mini engine shipped from Kent for the grand sum of £65 through shiply.com -- worth a look see

I've just booked a pallet with ETS (www.etsltd.co.uk) which was under £50 for an economy service (2-3 days).

You do need to make sure it has been drained of any lubricant or fuel before it gets shipped as couriers really don't like mucky engines making a mess of other customers' deliveries.

It's not going international, so dont tell them it's an Engine.  They will probably charge a premium, baring in mind it could get 'messy'.

Just say it's spares or something and get the engine put into a crate so it cant be seen.

ETS ask for fluids to be drained but there was no surcharge on the carriage for the item.  Couriers tend to have two lines on oily bits.  Either they won't touch them or they insist they are fully drained.  It makes sense to at least do that as it is a fire risk and if it leaked then the mess isn't fair on other people shipping their stuff - it could also land you with a big bill if you're caught.

I was quite proud of my little pallet this evening when I wheeled it out, all boxed in with ply and boarded underneath with some scrap tong and groove.  Lovely bit of overdone woodwork!  ;D

As mentioned above --- I had a mini engine and gearbox brought from Kent to somerset by a shiply courier for £65. Was strapped to a pallet but courier was bothered about getting it drained, so it came "as is".

I got a V6 engine shipped to the Channel Islands a couple of years ago, make sure its in a BOX that is sealed, call it "spares" and drain everything out of it. 99% of couriers only care about the weight, not what it is, as long as it doesn't leak. UPS charge 15% on top for engines because of the chance of leakage, but if they don't think its an engine..................
