Good evening one and all hope your all well?  So summers is coming and thoughts have turned to the hols. Only this year we are swopping tent for dare I say a caravan, but SWMBO wants a home from home. So were looking at 17-18 footers on single axle 6 berths for the tribe.

Now to the point a towing vehicle. My fantastic Omega has won again with a GTW (gross train weight) of 3825kg less GVW (gross vehicle weight) of 2225kg means i can tow up to 1600kg.I'm not using the 85% rule which would be higher at aprox 1800ish, i'll stick with Vx figures all found on the VIN plate.

So the reason for the subject now Phew! My Omega is getting a bit tired at 146,000, although i've done a lot of work on it, like new road springs, brakes incl discs, water valve, rocker gaskets, cambelt and tensioner, waterpump, aux drive belt and tensioner, c/d wiring and more Blimey should have a bought a new car. Ah theres the rub! Checking max towing weights of other cars and i'm shocked to find that i can tow more than much bigger i thought cars. Like a Chrysler grand voyager3.3 v6, ford galaxy TDi and 2.8 v6, kia sedona 2.9 TDi, Jaguar xj 4.0 v8, Chrysler 300c V8 (the one that looks like a big box on wheels) so i checked some 4x4's wouldn't buy one just 'cause of r/tax but a big jeep grand cherokee 5.7 V8 is lower than my 'mega as well. Blimey. Now lets check later face lift 2000 on 3.2 Omega's as this is what i'd like but it seems they can't tow as much as my old one!!!!!!!!!!!

So just to confirm could any of you fine gents out there with a 3.0 or 3.2 estate auto pre/mini or full face lift let me know by looking on the VIN plate what your GTW and GVW's are to work what to replace my old banger with. I'll be looking for something with low mileage later. Your help as always much appreciated

Well some of the cars you were comparing against were front drive crap so that doesn't help.

You can legally tow up to your kerb weight I think, but basically you can tow virtually any single axle van.

Thanks for the replies. Just shows that although the saloon doesn't weigh as much as my estate it can tow higher weights with the 3.0 engine, they base it on its ability to pull away on a 12% gradient. so cheers for that. I now know a 3.0 estate will pull loads on a mini facelift, but am still intrested in what the later 2000/1 MY on would be.

my 3.2 elite estate's values are:

2345Kg
4220Kg
1=1080Kg
2=1290Kg

so that would give a towing capacity of 1875Kg?

Well apparently they advise for anyone to tow 85% but it isn't law.. I read in the caravan club mag it would be like "a tail shaking the dog" if you were near the limits of towing weight.

Though in case of towing caravan, surely the car would be heavier with passenger and luggage, so possible still within 85%?

On a site in Cornwall I saw this Rover 25 pull in towing a big single axle caravan

No affence to Rover 25's or there drivers of course  

But, the guy driving was as big as Giant Haystacks though

Absolutley top hole what! cheers guys. SWMBO was starting to talk about god help us a BMW 530 touring but now I know  the 3.2 estate can tow 1850 looks like i'll be a hunting soon for nice late Omega battle tank estate, which when i'm on my own in it will pick up its skirts and run quiet nicley

good luck in your search, I picked this up (52-reg 3.2 elite) for £5k a couple of months ago ... popped up on autotrader after looking for 3 months  



... and talking of picking up skirts, it seems to handle corners better than my old 3.0 facelift saloon ...

Don't forget when you have it all loaded up you can get your car and van weighed for a small fee (with a printout) at your local council weighbridge. Ours was located at the entrance to a council rubbish tip.
