« on: 11 October 2010, 21:15:34 »

:( My daughters computer has become so slow it's barely working, having rummaged around in it, it's obvious it's full of garbage ,it is so slow i can't even get into system restore to take it back to standard spec, can i restore it by going in to the BIOS system at the start or do i have to take it in somewhere? it's a newish computer so i don't want to sling it if it's an easy fix,any help is welcome :y

if the disk is full with temporary files (from browsers )
clean them and some other unnecessary files..
then defrag your disk..

but imo re-build always brings the system to a more stable and fast state..(of course if you have a bootable os cd)

Did you make a set of recovery discs?
If not you may be able to restore to factory settings, depending on what make it is.  Most makers have a hidden sector on the hard drive that contains factory restore data.  Switch off computer and restart at fist slash screen (makers logo) tap  either F8,F9,F10 or F11. Tapping one of these F keys will load the recovery screen, (if the data is in hidden sector)

So start, tap (keep tapping) F8 until recover loads (if loads into windows as normal, start again, this time tap F9 etc.

If successful it will take info from hidden sector and restore to factory settings, you will lose all data, so if you can save what you need before restore.

Hope that makes sense   :y

doing  a rebuild will lose you all her favourites, saved files/music and any anti virus software/definitions (updates)

try the ccleaner route first including the registry checker thats included. highly recomended

I'm no expert by any means, but aswell as all that, I would clean up and get rid of all programs not regularly used, go to add/remove programs in the control panel. Use disk cleanup and disk defragmenter in system tools, this could make a noticeable difference. I always defragment before/after installing and deleting new software.

Don't download any free software like games, utility software etc, most of them contain spyware/adware that slows your pc down.

Do a virus check.

P.S. windows defragmenter isn't particularly good, it might be an idea to download/pay for a better one

and if you plan to re-build

right click my computer> manage>device manager and note the makes and models of network card, vga, sound , etc..

then check for availability of drivers.. if you can find even the one for network its ok.. you can install the others from internet..

:( It's full of games and "free" software downloads which probably isn't helping :(

If you were anywhere near me I would offer to take a look and see what needed to be done. failing that try the software recommended and also I use tune up utilities 2010, but best bet is if there is no files needed to be saved wipe it and start again :y

first uninstall all none used crap on it
then download some aiti virus softwear and update it and do a full scan

reboot it then defrag the main c: drive it come back in a while later thats done reboot and see how it is then.
that will most likely solve problem

unless it hardwear based but i dout it as new

it most likely just fool of crap and virus and drive is fraged up
