Fast Yamaha FS1E in Oxford Area
« on: 21 October 2010, 18:47:27 »

I was travelling down the A40 towards Oxford today when I passed a Yamaha FS1E that seemed to be going extremely well so I slowed down to pace him. He must have been doing about 60 mph with his head down over the clocks which is well impressive for an 'old' 50cc moped.
It had the racing seat and expansion chamber and when we slowed down to about 45 mph in traffic he had enough poke to blip the throttle and raise the forks (not a wheelie).
I had a 'fizzy' as a teenager and seem to remember that it did about 50 mph on a good day.
This bike must have been played with to go so well. Possibly a donor piston/barrel set-up like they use to do with 50cc Gilera fitted with the 150cc engine bits.
Ahh, memories of our younger days. ;D ;D :y

When I was 17 ( recently ha! ha!) all my mates had FS1E's, I inherited from an uncle a Honda C90 stepthrough, they all laughed, not when I left them for dead, I could get 68mph on the clock. Great machine and economical. :y :y

First bike was a proper pedal fizzy, never got 60 out of it though. Fizzies were usually quicker off the mark than AP50s but the Ap's usually had a better top end.
Then i bought e new fantic cavellero, de restricted it...carb/exhaust & it peed over all the Japs & was fun off road. 8-)

Most mopeds had tuned speedometers ime, and the more people filed the ports and messed about with the exhausts, the slower and noisier they became. They sounded a lot faster though.
I had a slightly different approach to going faster when I was 16. Flew round outer East Belfast on a 750 Norton Commando (among other things) until I got caught. I thought about doing a runner but Mr. RUC man had a sub machine gun in his hand as he was asking me questions. ::) ;D ;D
Had 7 court appearances and 12 convictions by the time I was 18. Had a hell of a job getting insured, and had to pay through the nose. Insuring a Chevette HS at 19 involved being extremely economical with the truth on the application form. ::)
