Ronnie project 2007/2 latest
« on: 06 May 2007, 19:44:42 »

Today was the big day for cracking on with my LPG Elite project. So, 9am and off I go. Took the second bank apart last night, camcover off, sprockets off, cams out and all 12 hydraulic tappets out.

This morning started with servicing the 12 remaining tappets (did 12 at marks yesterday). Great advisefrom Mark here and they are relatively simple to do, though a little time consuming. You do need a vice (which I also have) and a suitable drift as Mark says, I used a sump key (hexagon brass thing about 2" long). All 12 of the second bank freed up although 3 were sticky. Of the 12 we did yesterday, 2 had broken springs which might explain the top end noise. These were replaced with 2 from Marks spare car bank! Thanks to mark for those :)

So, on with this morning. Priming the last 12 meant filling a small container with fresh oil and then pumping each tappet whilst submerged in the oil until air bubbles stopped. Then into a bag and of to the car.

Firstly fitted the new water pump and torqued it up. Then put all 24 tappets back in, then all 4 cams, all cam shells, cam seals, sprocekts (hand tightened) then had to align all 4 cams. Did bank 1 first, turning each cam by hand until the appropriate timing mark lined up with the back plate. WIth the aid of 1 Laidback and a lot of brute strength, managed to hold cams in place whilst I fitted the locking peg. Then repeated for bank 2. A bit more challenging due to the lack of room for spanners and cam 4.

Next, the cambelt. Ah yes. The cambelt. That will be the new original VX ones that have no markings on them! Now, I can and did manage, but anyone doing this for the first time MAKE SURE they are marked or you will struggle.

Timing adjusted and all cjhecked several times for torque and alignement. job done.

Then timing covers back on with nice gaskets. Note in one of the pics the cam bearing shell and that little hole Pete was on about. be careful NOT to plug this with sealant or you will have leaky cam selas in a few weeks.

Next was the plugs leads - dis pack fun. Follwed by all the vacuum pipes back, then the plumbing nightmare. I say nightmare because of the canabalised pipework for the LPG system.

After cuppa numnber 8 Dave and I pressed on to get it running at least. Inlet manifold, plenum, ICV, lots of pipes, lots of checking, lots of bagpie heaving and swearing - again due to the nonsense that is this LPG installation ( to be modified by me VERY soon).

Finally, all back together and start. Well. It did start - of a sort, but didn't sound great. Exhaust is blowing somewhere to be checked, but the car only ran on 4 and there was one hideous noise from the front. That turned out to be Laidback shouting, but all the same another hideous noise turned out to be the Alternator. SOmething has managed to egt inside it during this process and the sparks were entertaining to say the least. Disconnected the aux belt and tried again. Car runs, but still on 4 minus the noise from the alternator. Tappets are not as noisy as I expected at this stage, but will need to be run down for 15 minutes. Turned off due to lack of power and wasting fuel smell.

Anyway . Lots of pics. CLICK TO ENLARGE:

Bank 1 minus any hydraulic tappets

In fact, both banks minus any tappets, cams, sprockets, water pump, cambelt tensioners - anything.

Plastic bag with 12 tappets and oil. These are just after priming

12 Tappets back in Bank 1

location of cam marking for rebuilding. See Marks reference in Maintenance section

Close up of that marking

having identified which one, cam 1 going back in

Note the cam shell oilway hole. Careful not to block this

4 Cams back in, all shells torqued up

Using spanner to hold cams in place to fit cam lock to bank 1

Old water pump next to teh new one. Mmmmm I wonder why I changed it again?

Water pump fitted and torqued up

One new genuien VX cambelt. Only markings are to tell you it is genuine and erm.... yeah!

New tensioner and block torqued up. Remove top roller to ease belt fitting

Belt successfully fitted dispite lack of markings. You know it is right because it fits, there are no slack bits and nothing is stretching either!

Locking kit removed, belt turned for about the 10th time. Everything fine

First rocker cover back on. So is the timing belt cover.

More next time!

Good work Fin

Maybe the running on 4 is because 2 plug leads are crossed?

Happens to the best of us ;D

Thanks Martin.

Right. Problems solved this morning.......

Firstly, plenum off to access the Dis pack and then swap over plug leads 4 & 6! Duh!!!

Then, bagpipes off again, air box off again, cable tray off, aux tensioner off and finally alternator off. Now, the alternator is actually not hard at all. 16mm spanner on the two nuts at the back and undo the torx bolts from the front and, er that's it. Then, 13mm nut and 8mm nut to realease the two cables and out it comes.

Now. The problem. Yesterday whilst doing up the 4 cam sprockets, I torqued them up. then you have to angle tighten them. I did all 4 and on the very last one just as I was happy with them, the torx drive snapped. Wasn't too worried as job was done and it was a cheap set anyway. Threw the bit I had in the drive in the bin. Turns out the other smaller half found its way straight into the alternator! On removing the alternator this morning, it was immediately obvious that something was loose inside. A quick shake and out popped this:

Coin is just for size comparison, it wasn't in there too!

So. back on with the alternator and rebuild the front back up. Replaced the LPG bagpipes with proper petrol ones and fired it up.

Now it runs on all six. Very tappety as expected initially, but still a bit tappety after a good 30 minutes. A bit disappointed as I was expecting that to be quitening down by then. Anyway, no obvious leaks anywhere and it runs again.

Next week I will sort out this LPG and check the back box which is a bit noisy. Then a road test and a bit more sorting out.

Good stuff Fin, I take it the sparks have stopped ;D

So I was right about the plug leads crossed :)

Take it for a run, it took AGES for my Elite tappets to shut up after I primed them all...

NOT GOOD :(

Just been out for a test drive. Absolutely gutless. More power from a moulinex blender. Had a quick check to see if the engine was still there or not.

Got to a bit of dual carriage way and attempted to make it go above 50mph. It kicked down and then made a strange whooshing sound, at which point I backed right off. Now when you blip the throttle, it sounds like a turbo with the pipe off.

A quick look reveales the air injection rubber pipe on the passenger side has split, possibly hence the whooshing sound.

Now. The lack of power? I suspect the left cat is blocked. GREAT, I just weighed in two for Laidback. I'll see if they still have them tomorrow and get the passenger one back.

Also, oil light came on twice, EML on and off several times although I suspect this may be something to do with the LPG system being bypassed for now.

All in all, very disappointing.

Lack of power and the whooooosh sounds like a blocked exhaust

Had exactly the same issue on the Elite

Took me ages to find!

Fin,

I have two spare V6 cats, and many other bits you might find useful

I'm sure we could come to a mutual arrangement  :y
