Slightly off-topic...
When I get visitors from abroad, it can be quite difficult to explain how er do things over here. For example:
- Why does this restaurant say fully licensed? Do you have restaurants that operate without a license?
- No this is not a license to run a restaurant, 'fully licensed' means they can sell alcohol.
- I see... so this corner shop over there that says 'Off License' does not sell alcohol then?
- err... no. 'Off License' actually means they do sell alcohol....
Another one:
- Why are we going to this Pub when the one across the road says ‘Free House’?
- Errr… no it’s not free… it’s to do with the breweries… I like this one, it better because... never mind, I’ll buy if that’s a problem.
And another:
- Why are you checking the train timetable to Leeds?
- Because I want to see the Leeds Castle.
- err.. this is actually in Kent. It is just called the Leeds Castle.
- So why is it called Leeds Castle if it is in Kent?
- Donnow... that's how they do... as you know Buckingham Palace is not in err... Buckinghamshire, it is in Central London. And Blenheim Palace is not actually in Blenheim... Blenheim is a forest in Germany...
- I see... well I also wanted to see Edinburgh castle, where might that be then?
- Edinburgh Castle? Why, in Edinburgh of course....
