typical of the majority of Londons firefighters, always putting money over the sanctity of human life & if there's any firefighter FBU members on here that think I'm out of order please do tell me, I'd be very keen to hear the justification of striking on the night that most kids, elderly & vulnerable will be injured  >:( totally dispicable, makes me physically sick. Let's hope some of our green goddesses still work. We need legislation to prevent any of the emergency services from taking industrial action. We have it for the police and the ambulance service just don't strike (anymore  ::)) unlike some of the egocentric, money grabbing drip stands water fairies that would rather stand around outside supermarkets with collection buckets being hero worshipped than grafting... arrrggghhh  >:(

If you're a firefighter that your FBU colleague's would call a scab, then my comments don't apply to you & I have the utmost respect :y also remind them that they most likely have friends & family living in london who won't think they're so great if they need an appliance & can't get one  :P :P :P

remember, remember the plans to scrap current rotas and force staff to sign new contracts or face the sack..................nah doesn't have the same ring to it  ::)

I doubt the strike will take place, but announcing the action for bonfire night highlights the cuts being made. job done.

Heard the knuckle-dragger that heads up the FBU on the radio earlier. Repeatedly questioning him on the wisdom of a strike on firework's night. His only answer was "weeell, there doesn't have to be a strike. If we get .....". >:(

Firefighters work 15-hour night shifts. The Brigade wants to change it so that hours are taken off the night shift and added to the day shift.

Talks have been ongoing for five years, and a compromise from the original proposal of two 12 hour shifts, to an 11 hour day and 13 hour night, with a range of other benefits are still firmly on the table.

There comes a time when someone has to say that, since lengthy negotiations have not worked, this is the way they WILL work in future. No one is being sacked or losing money (unless they're moonlighting), so why the big deal, I wonder?  :-? ::)

Agree with every word, especially the point about emergeny services not being allowed to strike. Cameron should grow a pair and introduce legislation immediately. :y

Reinforces the point I made in the "cuts" thread yesterday, regarding how the left will use the cuts as a weapon - "they will make sure the cuts adversly affect the most vulnerable", or words to that effect.
If firemen going on strike on bonfire night isnt deliberately making the most vulnerable suffer (possibly with losing their lives) I dont know what is. ;)

Well under normal circumstances I would have said that since the FB watch system etc is based on the Royal Navy model, they should be run on the same disciplinary lines i.e. don't turn up for Duty for a day or two, you're AWOL. Don't turn up for Duty for a week or more & you're a Deserter! But what's 'normal' anymore? :(
As for Moonlighting, I thought it was 'de rigeur' for Firemen?, that's why they don't want shift pattern changes, it buggers up their other work hours  ::) ;D

One day someone might actually tell the truth over why they won't change shift patterns.

It is called "moonlighting" ... most (NOT all) of these "shift workers" who have wangled very long nightshift rotas will work 3 nights on 4 nights off. On their nights off they will be found, very often, driving taxis, working bars/clubs as bouncers etc etc. cash in hand "black economy" jobs.

They also spend much of their 15 hour "on duty" time resting, so also allowing "outside" work when off duty.

That is the main reason for resisting changes to work patterns .. nowt else.

i think you've hit the nail on the head Entwood with regards resistance to shift changes, but I'm sure everyone will find a way round it - i think the fire service have gone about it hopelessly, as you say its common knowledge so they must have expected changes wouldnt go down well  :(
