Am I being too sensitive?
« on: 30 October 2010, 23:30:58 »

I watched, by accident rather than design, an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, a children's sci-fi series on CBBC (my daughter was watching).

I thought I'd misheard something, but tonight checked the online episode.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vmvyh

At around 15:50, this young chap says (switch on subtitles, if you like):

"So we had to hike to Buenos Aires and get a boat to Las Malvinas and a cargo plane across the Atlantic."

Las Malvinas? Is that what we call the Falklands these days. The BBC lives in a world of its own.

Perhaps it's just me...

Fair comment. :y

Both my kids love it. As the thread title suggests, maybe I am too alert for instances of BBC bias. ;)

yes, but the program is fiction, and the entire doctor who "history" although written in our universe and time line, does not actually identically parallel it...

this means that it's entirely valid to change things like the Falklands to the Malvinas,  as it is not referring to our commonly accepted reality and history, but to and ENTIRELY fictional one...

thus, details like this,  to the scifi nut...  set some ground work, go towards demonstrating to the eagle eared geek, how much "depth" there is in the fabricated "alternate reality" that the entire Dr Who franchise "inhabits"

Aside from people whom live/work there, the military, some oil prospecting companies and veterans of the Falkland War: I doubt if the islands have much relevance for kids or the media types at the BBC. :'(

It`s a national trait with we British, we have periods of inexplicable frenzied obsession, the media feed it with constant hype, politicians aggrandise themselves, hobby-horses are mounted, principles have to be paid-for, lives are sacrificed, a movie planned, a public inquiry held and then.......memories fade and things move-on: "here`s Jim with the weather!" :-/

The BBC probably need to make money by flogging their programmes worldwide. As everyone hates us, it was probably a good move.

According to your reporting, I would suggest that a boat from Buenos Aires might well be labelled as going to Las Malvinas so it gives a local feel to the story.  It depends if the story writer is trying to involve the viewers.  How many young viewers would pick up on it is questionable.  Some might just get the atlas out and ask their parents where Las Malvinas is 'cos it's not marked - there could be a useful bit of learning there (but I'm stretching credibility too far I think!).

Probably too sensitive on this one occasion perhaps.   ;) :) ;D

It's a bloody disgrace and an insult to the good people who defend our great nation.

It's like referring to Northern Ireland as Ireland.
