Well, even the most "safe" jobs are going now.
I WAS the UK project manager for a company that has a long and successful history, started by two men and run as a "family" company has now been bought out recently by a bigger company, and we were told today that over HALF of our workforce including some management (including me too) is to be made redundant on (wait for it..........)Christmas eve.

They need to recoup a lot of the money they paid for us quickly, to (again, wait for it............) buy another company!!

Words fail me. Right on Christmas, and because most of us have less than 2 years service in, we get no redundancy just paid as usual.  There is no sentiment in business, is there.

Just out of interest, this is the THIRD time I've been made redundant in THREE last jobs in the last 10 years.

Anybody beat that?? :'( :'( :'(

I was once in a company taken over by real "money" men >:( >:( >:(

They announced as well on Christmas Eve that half the HO staff would be dispensed with! :o :o :o :o >:( >:(

So yes there are many right nasty people out their in business who have no feelings in regards to anyone but themselves, and of course money!

There is a big difference between running a business for that essential profit, taking into account the good care of your staff, and just making as much profit as possible no matter who gets hurt in the process.  I have seen the "difference" in action, and it is far from pretty :( :( :(

Mike, I'm terribly sorry to hear you are being chucked on the heap again.

I can match your three times, but mine were in the space of 15 months.

Just goes to show times are still hard, and this economic growth is coming too late.

Still, if it's any consolation, you are a highly qualified and experienced spark, so if worst comes to the worst, you can stick an advert in the local rags and be self-employed for the short-term.  Add to that a thoroughly bloody nice bloke, and you shouldn't be looking for work for long.

This beer is taking forever to brew.  My shout.  :y

The "job for life" option, enjoyed by our parents/grand-parents, would seem now to be a distant memory.........a casualty of our modern wish for 'freedom'. :'(

A sad time indeed, but why do these things seem to happen at Christmas, why not leave it till January and then, at least you could enjoy Christmas.... :( :(

Sorry to hear this mate.  Companies seem to choose Christmas as the time to issue bad news. With our lot the last three Christmas's have seen redundancy programmes being launched ---- kind makes you look forward to the festive season !!!!

I, so far, am still employed .... but working in the knowledge that next year will see me £7k down :-/

So sorry to hear this mate, have been through it the once myself and no wish to repeat the experience. Dont know why so many companies choose to make such announcements before Christmas (guess they think that theyre acting in the best interests of those concerned in that it would be better than letting them spend money at christmas and then finding themselves made redundant after and with no hope of paying it all off ). Anyhow, hope you find something soon.

i gave up working for idiots like that in 1999....   been self employed ever since...


frankly, there ARE times when i'd kill for a nice boring 9-5 salaried job...

but for the most part, it's much more comfortable....   as long as i pull my finger out and get the work in, and actually do it.....    ::)

Really sorry to hear that. There is never a good time really but never a worst time than christmas.

Got made redundant myself 2 years ago from the motor trade. I was lucky to find a new job soon after but redundancies are again on the cards between now and march. Trying to scale the workforce down by 10%. Got my first baby due christmas eve! Dont know what i would do :(

Thoughts are very much with you six :)

yep i really feel for you mate...like a lot of peeps i`ve been down the dole office this year, i`m on partime hours at the mo as the contract i`m on wont pay for a full time store guard so the shoplifters visit when i`m not in the store.....i`m hopeing that after xmas the supervisor will find us a fulltime gig.... :(
