Nottingham to become a dim area
« on: 10 November 2010, 13:18:26 »

Nottinghamshire County Council spends more than £5million a year lighting the streets in its area. This is "five times more than in 2005 because of rising energy prices", we learn from The Daily Mail and others.

Since the Council is looking to save £150million over the next three years, it is looking hard at its lighting budget and has decided that some £1.25million a year can be saved from its street lighting bill. But it will achieve these savings by dimming lights along main roads. Furthermore, up to half of the lights in residential areas will be turned off between midnight and 5.30am. Those in rural areas will be turned off completely.

A very sensible idea in my eyes, the sooner its done the better.

A number of villages around here already have this

This is becoming quite a growing widespread policy, and I see no reason as to why they should not save power and money by adopting this practice ;) ;)

Of course, it is always sensible to save money but the street lights were presumably put there for a purpose in the first place.  :-?

But times change and what was once thought acceptable is now considered an unnecessary expense that the ratepayers are no longer prepared to pay for ;)

About twenty five years ago the lights used to be turned off at midnight were I live, then the policy changed to leaving them on all night. Although in principle I agree with the cost savings along with reduced fuel use etc the reservation I have with this idea is the possible increase in crime of many types and also anti social behaviour. The world is a very different place than it was tweny five years ago.

I agree that light pollution is an irritant, especially to those who like studying the night sky. Nevertheless, I would suggest that street lighting does help to reduce burglaries, assaults and traffic accidents, especially in  densely populated areas. Blacked-out villages are one thing, blacked-out towns are another.

I'm concerned (as others have already stated), that this may lead to an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.
That said, I'm supportive of 'good house-keeping' measures. :y

I'll pass on commenting about Nottingham to become a dim area! I used to live there many years ago. ;D

This is a classic bit of there is a crisis, cuts have to be made otherwise there will be a crisis. Lights seem a sensible target. Far better than cutting social services say and then having bed blocking in the hospitals as there would be no one to care for folk when they came out. Some hospitals already have TEN % beds blocked in this way.

I had better review my situation - every night 150 mains powered lights come on in my back garden for 5 hours.!!

Have done this for years.

150m over 3 years says they are wasting a lot of money somewhere then. they should be publishing where the money is going and let the ratepayers decide what needs to be saved.

That'a bit risky - the people might decide that they don't really need all those overpaid useless council executives!
