Why is a 10 year passport only valid for 9 years 6 months?

Some countries wont allow you in if you passport has less than 6 months on it.

mainland Europe its probably still valid, its the USA which gets bit stroppy when its got less than 6 months on it.

Agree with you about the states,anybody in a uniform thinks that they are GOD. Airport staff are the worse,really poor customer service attitude,treated like animals.

more to the point, why does it cost £77.50! previous passport issued and  identity already checked (.50p) . whats the £77 for?
