I thought it was the "Royal Automobile Club" - you'd think they'd campaign for drivers, rather than for keeping the electronic traffic copspeed camera..

Speed cameras prevent 800 people being killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads, according to research commissioned by the RAC Foundation.

It seems someone is concerned that more councils might follow the lead of others and get rid of their fixed revenue generatorsspeed cameras, and that people will die as a 'direct' result.

In the radio article I heard this morning they made it sound more like the speed cameras were jumping out and resuscitating people after accidents 


Or was it only the AA who were meant to be the motorists evangelist?

I'm sure the AA have been equally guilty of jumping on the bandwagon in the past.

Oh, well, glad I didn't remember to renew my RAC cover , just hope I don't break down.

Oh they have indeed - I just couldn't remember if the RAC ever touted themselves as a 'motoring organisation'


(I'm still waiting for the anti-speed folks to turn up and tell me that I shouldn't have a problem with this if I never speed )

His point was that they believe that 800 lives will be saved a year by keeping speed cameras.

Currently it is about TEN people a day that are killed on UK roads. Most aren't caused by accidents but by human error in the vast majority of cases. Even the ones caused by someone falling asleep are human error, they should have been more rested before undertaking the journey.

The problem with speed cameras has been the bad press from revenue generation. I like to "drive" as much as the next petrolhead but and this is the but most of the UKs roads aren't suitable for driving anymore. We really should have made the technology transition to tractor beams, technology controlling the vehicle in traffic and keeping a constant speed and so on.

If speeding is the cause of deaths and incidents then maybe the answer is custodial sentences rather than fines. But of course that is up to society to determine.

Completely wrong summary I'm afraid.  It says 70 lives and 700 injuries making about 800 KSIs (Killed or Seriously Injured).

What annoys me more than anything are the statistics that keep getting brought up.
I do not advocate speeding, drink driving, mobile phone use whilst driving etc, however....they reckon 3000 people are killed in accidents on the roads each year, but when they dish out the statistics for the amount of deaths due to whichever cause they are highlighting, they never add up.
When its a purge on speeding, they quote high figures, when drink driving, high figures, mobiles...again high figures. I can only assume that the majority of road deaths are caused by drivers that are speeding whilst drunk and are on their mobile phones. Any life lost is one too many....but please don't patronise me..

Oops, sorry. You are right.

Just had a look on the web and for 2009 Britain only had 2222 deaths (a mere six a day) and 600 a day road casualties, an improvement on the prevous year. I agree that stats can be made to say anything but it doesn't escape the likelyhood that sooner or later each of us will know one or more person killed or life changingly injured in a road incident.

Of course the stats are twisted to sensationalise everything.  I think the Swindon study proves its all 'dangle berries'.

Certainly in Oxfordshire, it was the toffs in a village where a camaera was switched off, that wee making all the noise. Nobody killed, though I wouldn't mind going on the rampage there with a 12 bore. Knobheads.
