Cold?!?!........Pah!
« on: 03 December 2010, 15:40:52 »

I have friends in Iowa (U.S central-midwest): 2,000 miles from the coast: it gets REALLY cold there in the Winter.
I remember back in 1991 when I visited them in January and the ambient temp was -40C./-40F. (memorable because of the concurrence) which was measured without any windchill factor.
My friend had a 5 gallon pail of neat antifreeze in the shelf in his barn; it had gone completely solid!....as had a can of SAE 30 lube oil. :o

There were warnings on Tv. about the danger to tooth-enamel; which (unprotected) at those temps. would simply shatter away from teeth at the sudden change in temp. during breathing.

I also recall a young local chap froze to death there, in what was said to be only '10 minutes' of trying to free his car, after sliding it into a small gulley.

.....after recalling the above; I`m now trying-hard not to complain too much at our bit of a cold snap. ;)

Now that's an experience I'd love to have - such a demonstration of nature's raw power puts most things into perspective (or should, at least). 8-)

I was up at my mates in slamannan on tuesday and at 5pm it was -13(4feet of snow) it was great driving along the back roads average speed off about 30-45mph.
I don't know if its just me but the snow isn't as slippy as normal its very powdery my wife says its like sand as you cant make a snowball easily
