Snow on the roof of your car
« on: 02 December 2010, 12:36:12 »

I just read this comment posted elsewhere today:

Police will be stopping people from tomorrow who are driving with snow on the roof of their car and will issue fixed penalty of £60 + 3 points. It's in the highway code and was also on bbc radio 3!!

I assume it to be true.  :o :o

Yeah I heard about that, police are going to be hella busy if that's true.  Especially as ice often forms on the roof if the snow is left long enough between trips.

This has been an offence for some time Nick, as is anything that could cause danger to other motorists or yourself whilst driving.  The police consider it could fall into your vision area, distracting you and also other motorists.

This is the section of the Highway Code that covers this and the Police will use if necessary under the Road Traffic Act:

229

Before you set off

    * you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
    * you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
    * make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
    * remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
    * check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

[Laws CUR reg 30, RVLR reg 23, VERA sect 43 & RV(DRM)R reg 11]

 ;) ;)

Yep, there are a lot of them about! Incidentally I thought of you this morning (ooer) as I saw not one but two Omegas on my way to the M3 - one stuck waiting to go toward Ascot (champagne or silver saloon) and one as I was heading back toward Sainsbury (I forget what colour now) - and wondered if either of them were you ;)

Oddly enough, in the boot right now, I have:

One large stiff 24" wide broom.
One shovel.
One bag of cat litter.
Oh and the old car battery ;D
