The Government have relaxed the HGV driving rules for the next 4 days to deal with the distribution emergency.

The limit of 9 hours per day driving is being increased to 10 hours.

Does this help the lorry drivers on the OOF, and elsewhere? :-/ :-/

Or does it mean employer explotation? :-/ :-/

an hour?? they are all heart, considering its taking some drivers in cars that extra hour just to get 15 mile down the road.

glad I didnt go for my class 1 now

This all seems very piece-meal to me - should there not be contingency plans already in place to keep essential services running - being that the majority of freight seems to be shifted over the road network (sadly) rather than by rail?

thats a just a joke!!
during the oil shortages way back in the late 70,s we were running oil tankers to powerstations, it was bunker fuel, so you filled the tanks up hot, you had to get to the destination wth the oil still hot in the tanks or you could not get it out, so hours were officially ignored and we just got on with the job!! was brilliant till going down the big hill into barry the ice and snow was just to much, and we slid down to hit the barrier at the bottom, lampost on top of the cab giving off sparks , me mate in the bunk trying to get some kip in just his undies had to abandon  ship whilst it was below freezing and still snowing,
police turned up and asked what we were doing? when we told them oil supplies for the station , he said can you fix the fault? i said i could bodge the broken airvalve on the tank with a bit of wood if he was ok with us driving like that? copper said have you got enough tools to do it>? go for it we never saw you!!!
now thats emergency rules!!

9 hours driving time is the norm but under standard rules can be extended to 10 hours twice a week but must be made up the next week. It works in a fortnightly cycle based on 45/90 hours.
 If you have to exceed your given running hours due to crawling along in traffic & nowhere to pull in you mark this on the back of your paper tacho card or or make an entry on your digi readout. Well over over complicated!

TBH, they're not making a real exception to the rules... Just making themselves sound good 

And I bet any extension to hours has to be made up in the 2 week cycle

Thats an under statement they could just let essential trucks run on a log book somthing similar to a rcv(bin lorry)
