Cold snap - how low can you go
« on: 07 December 2010, 21:16:59 »

I know there are many around the country suffering horrendous weather conditions at the moment and for us southern softies it's come as a bit of a shock I'm sure.
I'm not just talking about the snow - but the unprecedented sub zero temperatures.
I - probably like most sit in the comfort of our lounge in the evening and look in amazement  :o at the temperatures on the weather map after the news and get excited if the guage in the car reads lower than minus 4 the next morning. I remember the eureka moment taking the kids to school last year when the guage dropped to minus 6 and shrieking to the kids to look at the guage.

Never in a million years did I think for one moment today when I left Bicester to travel to Wakefield...... the temperature in Bicester at 6:15am minus 7......as I got to the M1 at Northampton ...minus 8.......as I headed north approaching Leicester.......minus 9 ( I was now willing for another degree to take it into double figures :P ) ..come on you can do it..... yes  :y - Nottingham minus 10 (minus 10 for goodness sake) yes  :y........hang on ......past Nottingham minus 11.....minus 12..... :-X :-X :-X

Ok Ok - time to stop at the next services as screen wash was now obviously one large ice cube behind the front bumper and I needed to see where I was going.  So - Trowley Services I think it was ... into the car park...minus 12.5. No real snow anywhere - but the remains of some packed ice in the parking areas. As I pulled to a stop the guage which I'd normally expect to warm up a bit with heat from the engine wafting around ... but no it finally stopped on this  :o :o :o :o :o

As I said - never in a million years in this country in the north Midlands - bright sunshine - not a lot of snow around did I expect to be drinking a coffee in my car looking at this.
I'm sure those in the not so far reaches of the North can do better than this - but I'm flabbergasted  ::)

Wakefield by the way was a pussy minus 3 - Hull however I believe was also competing for minus 14.

Return journey - traffic reports all over the place of major accidents on many motorways - take real good care out there folks - you might be able to stop - but you need to be thinking FOR those around you too especially the trucks  :y.

Cheers
Ian.

but last week one day it was minus 20.

more that a smattering of snow is unusual, but now we've had three feet twice this year ( January and December )

-13 in Shifnal this morning.  The coldest I have recorded in a car was -17 on the A38 just South of Lichfield back in 2002.  I remember it because of the shock it gave me when I looked at the gauge and watched the engine temperature start to go down towards cold just as wheels started to spin at about 60 - well the road looked clear at the time.  One of those feet off everything and wait moments, thankfully nothing bad happened apart from new underwear required.

Had -9.5 a couple of nights ago and within 2 hours it was up to +2.4. Thought my outside temperature sensor has bust but it was perfectly accurate. :o

doesnt drop anywhere like that where I am. However, can seriously confirm that the -5% we had the other night with no wind chill factor (I live on the coast) was positively mild compared to the 0% we had earlier with wind chill factor!!
