Probably depends what you want to use it for becides making phone calls.  And what is important to you.

Mobile internet access
reliable
Battery life
Etc, etc .... !.

If you say what is important or what you're keen on having and if it's good, then people maybe able to help make a better choice?  ;)  :y

I don't want a Gay Phone for a start...

It must be able to make a phone call (hence not the Gay-Phone)...

It must be reliable

Nice clear screen that is responsive...

I have reached 10 days with wave, disabling 3g normally 1 week..

my recommendation;

whatever you decide before buying test the phone for gps lock, wifi, 3g, rear- front camera , camera flash (some models dont have) , pdf loading , flash player and google maps.. etc etc .. ;D

and after practising I definitely recommend touch screen models..

also the radio.. ;D

I've recentl changed my phone. Had a HTC Desire for about a fortnight now and my only gripe is that the speaker phone sounds a bit 'tinny' and could be a bit louder.
Apart from that, I'm well pleased. Much more advanced (complicated  ::)) than my previous phones, but I've got the hang of it now.
Battery life is acceptable for a 'smartphone'. Needs to be re-charged each night, but mine lasts from 8am until gone midnight with average use and about 30 mins of SatNav. (Which works as well as my Navman.)
A handy feature for making sure you're in the right place is the way it changes to Google 'Street View' on entering the destination post code.
(Quite amusing listening to the 'auto-voice' trying to pronounce the welsh street/place names. ;D)

I have a Nokia X6 and it has a free satnav application.

Not a bad phone, excellent battery life, not embarrassed by it.

We managed to get them free with our work contract :y :y

I went through this a little while ago and decided on the iPhone 4 and it is superb :y :y

The hype about calls and signal sense is just that... Hype! As long as you don't hold it in a death grip it's as good, if not better, at getting a signal than my Nokia e71 was ;) ;)

But it does depend on what you want... The iPhone is hyper stable and has virtually replaced the Lappy for general browsing... If posting/typing the "keys" are a little small, but all good for my requirements :y

I have sony ericsson x10 (the big one) battery not great needs charging every night but with the new upgrade to 2.1 its better.  Camera and gps are better now even though gps was great before.  Its a brill phone if you use facebook as it syncs your contacts with your facebook friends.  Cant comment on google maps or any others as i use Navigon for android
