Was it just me or did that 'steam train' have a diesel loco at the tail end (one presumes it was pushing rather than having the steam engine pulling dead weight)...

Yes Aaron, it is because Network Rail insist on it being there in case of main (steam) loco failure.  In that event the train can be pulled away from blocking the main lines and causing chaos.

Strangely the diesel version of the Orient Express has exactly the same type of diesel on the rear when travelling through Kent.

Believe me the special train operators are not happy about paying for the expense of the back diesel, and crew, but it is Network Rail's railway and they write the rules! ::) ::) ::) ::)

No its not.

Its because you are not allowed to pull a train tender first and turning triangles are few and far between these days so some tours need it.

There are a few that still run single engine (Tornado for one) but its dependent on the tour destination and facilities/route  :y

In the South East Mark they run the specials in a loop around Kent so that the engine faces the right way.

Around Bristol there is the Patchway Triangle that they use for steam specials from / to Temple Meads.  That's just the ones I know, and no doubt there are a lot more.

In the North you may be right Mark, but in the South I certainly have seen the steam loco going out, and coming back, at the front of the train.
