I couldn't waste the opportunity to have some fun. Plus I had to pick something up from the sorting office.

The MV6 was very civilised with gearbox in snow mode, and TC enabled. No dramas at all, except TC light moaning away trying to get up on of the hills (which it did easily enough).

After seeing a 1 series BMW get stuck in front of me, and the MV6 just gently going past, I reckon the Omega doesn't do so bad (admittedly, I was prepared for this snowfall).



Then I had a play with TC off for a bit of sideways fun

75l of petrol in tank, and always 40l of LPG in the boot. Plus a spare, charged battery, heavy toolkits, a bloody great vice, tow pole, shovels etc. Looks a bit low at the back

Mine behaved itself pretty well on the way to work.1/4 tank of petrol, 1/4 tank of LPG and halfords socket set in the boot, nowt else, I dont own a shovel.
I turn the TC off going uphill as it just cuts power off and causes loss of momentum. The hill coming out of the village was the most challenging, looking out the side window in the direction of travel but managed to keep going, just. If I stopped I would have had to roll back down and try again with a bit more momentum.
Snow mode on most of the way, didnt get above 25-30 until the A12 - even then it was 40 max.

My MV6 starts anytime but getting the frozen doors open is another thing entirely. Once in pulling away is best done with TC OFF 2nd gear & let the clutch do the work & yet again be reminded how much more involving RWD's are!!! 8-)

My TC only got turned off when I wanted to have myself some fun

I make a point of seeing how good the TC is on mine after all the hassles some people (aka Andy B ) have with theirs. Driving appropriately, mine just works. Yet all the BMWs around me are having to turn theirs off after watching them go nowhere (here the misfires for 20s, then hear the engine sound better, and watch the rears light up).


I am have racked my brains for years why some people say their TC works well, and others say its undrivable with it on.

If the car is stuck you have more chance of rocking it back & forth with the TC off til it "pops out"!!!

Sounds like my Dad's V70. A much safer traction control than the Omega, because at the slightest loss of traction it won't go. Full stop.

I slate it in normal dry / wet driving conditions but when the chips are down on snow (or when you end up trying to tow a 100' trailer tower across a muddy field ) I agree it does help.

I just wish it would take a back seat when there's plenty of grip and you've just overcooked it a little coming out of a junction and spun up the inside rear. I'd much rather it kept spinning than bog down in the middle of an A road.

Earlier this evening I spent an hour and a half slowly edging my manual Tubby Denzil up a rather steep 40 foot section of tarmaced hill, covered in hard packed (and well polished) snow.
Tried all sorts but found that scorring the compressed snow with a spade and laying rugs in front of the rear wheels was the only way we made any ground.

My thanks to the two guys that supplied the shovel and rugs. Their assistance and perserverance is greatly appreciated.

There were 3 particular places where I turned it off tonight.
First outside my house - It is uphill, so ni chance to build any momentum before rear wheels start to lose grip.
2nd &3rd were similar to each other - a sharp bend and then a steep uphill stretch, so low entry speed onto hill, not enough momentum to carry me up to the top.
I find the TC starts cutting in and the car looses too much momentum on such occasions. I would rather trust my right foot to strike the balance between grip and slide, I find the TC too crude. The car may be sliding, but its still moving and I can decide on amount of power/opposite lock etc.
I,m probably old fashioned though. I learnt to drive in the snow before TC, ABS etc. It was all seat of the pants back in the good old days.
