I'm off to Basingstoke tomorrow so hoping for a clear run. Just out of interest the company i'm loading from is in Armstrong road which is just off "Swing Swang lane"!
The local council must've had a reason for naming it so, can any locals enlighten?   No google cheats, i could do that!

No idea of its' origins but familiar with it.

Weather not too bad down here at the moment although it is still snowing gently. It has climbed a fraction over zero now after -12 last night so could get icy.

If you run out of hours around here give me a shout and I'll bring a portion of whatever Mrs. KW is cooking out to you if you like?

It probably is the site of a gallows, or gibbet, in Georgian, early Victorian times Guy ;)

Cheers Kevin. No problem with daily 15 hours but depending on the M25 it can be touch & go turning the whole thing round on a 10 hour drive. Luckily one of the fitters is running a truck to East Ham & the owner is driving him out to meet me @ Basingstoke so if i run out of driving hours an hour or two away from home he can put a card in & finish the run.
What would dinner have been???? Guy. :y

The name of the lane stems from Swang, meaning marsh or boggy land, and thus means Swing’s Marsh

Indeed, as it could well be a gallows, or gibbet, on the marsh, which was a common place to site them outside areas of population, on main routes into towns ;) ;)

The first small flakes are now starting to fall in Ashford, so it looks as though the forecasters have it right here!  They are talking of 10-15cm tonight ::) ::) ::)

I'll have to ask you what the roads are like on Thursday morning when my Dad's going to be passing through (assuming the car train between Calais & Folkestone is actually running!).. what's it like now, anyway?

Everything is fine around here and still above freezing, though I expect it to get a bit dicey overnight when it freezes.

And speaking of streets with silly names, how about this one in York (grew up there, I can still see the little church at the end of the street in my mind..) - Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate.  A really long name for a really tiny street..

I'm guessing not the Pork and Pineapple curry because we've just eaten that.  :P There's talk of beef stew, IIRC. :-*
