Not really in  that league - it'll do internet (so google earth for maps), email via google mail, downloadable games, and has a *very* (for a mobile) good camera and built-in editing software.

What I like most is that I haven't managed to break it in 4 years, and I can get a signal where most other phones give up - eg, on the top of ben nevis last year or on the bottom floor of the Ridings Centre in Wakefield (which is a "dead zone" to most phones.

I only want... Yeah yeah, get atouch screen and you'll be playing around with all the stuff it does with the best of them. Go for it Guy, they are easy to use.
No really i would'nt. Those who know me would agree. I can & quite often do leave the house withiut my phone which i know some would never dream of. It can take me days to reply to a text or miss call if at all. I never use phone internet even though the my little Nokia 6301 does have it. Despite my home PC having a big "plasma"? monitor & big sounding speakers & bass box thingy & a relatively i hardly use 5% of it's potential, a tekkie i'm not.
My other idea was to keep the Nokia which i'm more than happy with & has has little use so should last a while yet is to get the best handset i can without bumping my premium up, selling it boxed on ebay & pocket the pennies!!!

..but not if the 'phone calls' function is an important feature for you.  ;D ;)

If your current contract is with Orange, speak to them about your 'intended change of provider'.
I got a free HTC Desire with 600 mins (x-net and landlines), unlimited texts and e-mails, and 500mb internet allowance for £17.50 a month.
I've been with Orange for over ten years so 300 of the 600 mins allowance is some kind of 'loyalty bonus'.
The likes of Carphone Warehouse couldn't get anywhere near the 'Direct from Orange' deal. They said for £17.50 a month with the same mins etc they would have to charge me £299 for the phone.
Could have had the Desire HD for £2.50 more a month, but with a 4.3" screen (as 'fab' as that may be) I reckon it would be just that little bit too big for having with me pretty much every time I left the house.
The standard Desire has a 3.7" screen and that's plenty big e'nuff.
I've been with orange for longer than i can remember & presently get 300 texts, 800 x network, unlimited landlines & the dongle for the lappy:- £23 per month. I know some tarriffs give more minutes but i never use what i do get. Some statements read "Inclusive texts used, 5!!!!" :y

Daughter gave me her old one when she upgraded to the latest version, I think its rubbish, it doesn't respond properly to screen taps, and this makes it very difficult to use. Only good point is it is easier for texting, otherwise a loser.

Either its faulty, or you are using something hard to press (fingernail?).

gayPhone has one of the most responsive touchscreens out there.

But everyone will think their phone is 'best' and assume that then makes it 'best' for everyone else.

In Amigos case, I think (cost aside) the gayphone is a good contender, due to its incredible ease of use and stability - Amigo doesn't strike me as a Nerd (which rules out Android and Win6) or somebody who will tolerate crap for long (rules out Symbian smartphones). Not in a corporate, so Gooseberry is as much use as a used johnny, leaving Win7 and crApple (and Maemo - but I'll leave chrisgixer to comment on that, seeing as he has one).

But then, for Amigo, I would have recommended a Nokia 6310 - probably the best mobile ever made

Must have been faulty, iPhone responds to the lightest of touches. Its glass screen which can easily break makes it very responsive.

Evening Jaime. Says 6301 on the box but i think we're on about the same handset. It's a cracking little phone, does all i need it to do & it does'nt frustrate me, i've luzzed many of my older phones across the room in frustration. It's low mileage so should go another 18 months, i love the little stand up charging dock it comes with so reckon i'll get the best set i can & sell it!!!

No, the 6310 predates the 6301. 6310 was the pinnacle of phones, before the gayness set in.

Ask your provider what they can do if you don't take out another handset. Some give you a cash credit, some put you on a cheaper contract giving same minutes/texts etc.

This is definately a 6301. Dunno what the 6310 is but i'm sure from what you say it's a good'un. Previous one was a black 6500 classic. (the non sliding one?) The best thing about it was it was really slim but just a gimmick & fiddly to use. I'm more than happy with this one so may get a new touch screen & sell it. Guy.

Maemo (nokia n900) is utter utter UTTER shite, with shite sprincles on top. Personally I think symbian is very usable, and still even now can out multi task a gay phone with ease.

However symbian is not for a first timer, it not as obvious as the gay. Gay phone, as with the iPad, needs no instructions, no tips and tricks guide, just pick it up and all comes naturally, it just works, as said before, simples......which for me makes it a bit boring, I like stuff that still has secrets in it's operation that keep you interested, little tricks and short cuts in a an os that has depth.

But this thread is not for me, it's for Guy. So has to be iPhone, but which one? Iphone4 is bloody expensive, so 3GS version is probably a good starting point tbh. :y

If you are not in good terms with computers AVOID smartphones (any kind including symbian, win mobile or android).
Iphone is easy to use, and probably the best touch phone on the market. Yes there are phones with better cameras, more possibilities, but Iphone is one of the easiest to use, one of the fastest, and one with the best response screens out there.
I have a HTC (diamond), and it is bloody complicated for me and not intuitive at all. Take into account that I'm an IT developer and have a masters degree in electronical engineering, and for me it is complicated  :-[
If you really want touch screen mobile which is easy to use get a cheaper samsung or lg cookie.
