Just realised I hadn't done a Broadband speed test since changing to a wireless modem last month. I'd heard that wireless should improve the speed a little, but hadn't expected it to double.

I was getting around 6.95mb, never quite broke into the 7mb.
I've just run a test and got 14.84mb.

Actually wireless vs. wired - wired should win every time. There's simply more handshaking, collision avoidance and external interference on a wireless connection vs. a wired connection.

My guess would be that you are on an ADSL2+ line and your old wired modem was an ADSL modem while your new one is ADSL2+ compatible, thus allowing you to get the speed your line can handle rather than being capped at what plain ADSL can handle.

Still, never look a gift horse in the mouth, and all that.

So would that explain 02 being able to treble our connection speed? Previously sky could only manage 1.2 at best, 02 now deliver 3.5 on the exact same line. They have their "own equipment in the exchange" etc...?

It could do - it's my (limited!) understanding that ADSL2+ gains the most at the 'top end' of the speed spectrum because it makes use of higher frequencies (and those are usually the first to attenuate off) - but I know it also includes changes further down the spectrum, so that could well explain the speed change.

I think ADSL2+ allows more 'bits per bin' for example, which can net you a nice speed boost..

Yup, ADSL2 generally boosts the sync speed, with associated increase in throughput if the ISP can handle it (Be There (which is what O2 use) has been known to be a bit patchy in some areas)

Indeed - although on marginal lines ADSL can be a bit more stable than ADSL2.. at least it was for me in Slough (with 61dB attenuation on a supposed '2.5Km' line). Then again, that was with O2 - with Zen I had a rock solid 2.5Mb ADSL line, and O2 could only manage a flakey 2Mb line over the same copper..

I am cheating a little and giving a result from a very good test, admittedly.. speeds around here tend to drop off on Sunday evenings with Virgin when everyone is online to about ~25Mbps (which considering the price, does take the pee a little) ..

Still, I'll still be one of the first suckers to sign up for 100Mb when they release it.

depends on what you are paying for if a 7-8 Mb connection then good if a 20Mb then not so good

Go on then I will ask how much you pay for the Internet part? My service is only £38.80 per month inc Vat (45 euros). I am guessing yours seems like a bargain compared with that!! I am prepared to be wrong of course.
