advice from any of you dog owners out there
« on: 03 January 2011, 20:22:38 »

just taken on a 6mth old female german shepherd from my daughter as niether her or her partner can be with her as much as they would like due to work commitments. She has had all her jabs but is currently suffering from a runny bum and appears a little underweight. The diarohea could just be the change of enviroment but I wonder if anyone has any other ideas. We have wormed her and she is on a diet of chicken and rice with a very few biscuits. Ive had GSDs before some time ago and sadly our last one was a rescue dog that suffered from colitus and the steroids eventually didnt work and an autopsy showed she was riddled with cancer. Weve only had her 2 days so she is obviously still settling in and already she is calming down (though think it'll be a bit longer yet until she and the 2 cats get along  ;D) but the diarohea is a bit of a concern. Cheers in advance,

environment change can change immune system and the bacteria may infect the intestine .. may need antibiotics , better take to a vet imo..

edit: loosing water can quickly effect (I have seen numerous cases) so take it serious..

Hi bud, the fact that the dog is unsettled because of the change  of home could contribute towards the runs. You state that she is on a diet of chicken and rice is this a mix that you make up yourself? if it is it can be very difficult to get the balance right. I have owned Weimeranas for nearly 20 years ( a breed renowned for sensitive digestive systems) my first Weim suffered frequently from collitus the thing that seemed to settle him was chicken and rice recovery plan food from the vet, I would get some hyper allergenic food from the pet shop and try her on that for a few days and keep an eye on her , and hope that things settle down soon.If not maybe a word with the vet and possibly go down the recovery diet route
Hope this helps :y

what meat have you been giving her, if the food is to rich give them the runs and can lead to hair loss, german shepherd have bone problems and arthritis had 6 german shepherds 4 female and 2males, also make sure she dose not eat any grass as this can make them un-well give her dog biscuits and no meat for a few days bakers or working dog biscuits, and milk any thing with iron and calcium. check that her nose is wet and not dry, if dry can be an virus or infection, should notice a change with in a week if not got to vets, maybe aniemac and need a bost shot.( cat food is to rich)

Pinch the skin between ear & collar and pull it up & let go, if it doesn't immediately settle back again with no sign of being disturbed the dog is dehydrated. If the runs have only just started, ie: one day, then just make sure the dog takes plenty of liquid (actually drinks it!). The diet you are feeding is excellent in the circumstances, but if the runs persist for more than 2 days, a trip to the vet is in order as dogs go downhill very quickly when dehydrated. :y

Chicken and rice is good.....
I personally give Holly Egg fried rice when she gets an upset stomach....cook the rice....add it dry to frying pan then add a couple of eggs....stir and let it cool.....eggs for protien, same as chicken i guess....

works for me and Holly  ;)

cheers for the replies guys,
though still runny her stools (if you can call them that!) are slightly more solid now and a better colour. The chicken and rice is home cooked not from a bag and she hasnt been at the cat food! Were going to try her on some scrambled egg to try and bind her a bit as well as provide some protein then maybe a little of some dried food for "sensitive stomachs". She seems to drink ok but you can feel too much rib and breastbone on her IMO and she tires a bit quicker after walks/play than I think she should but -in conjunction with a sorted diet-she needs to build up her muscles and stamina through more exercise. As I said, dont think she had too much exercise before. Her nose is not hot or dry and eyes/gums are good. Generally very lively but calming down nicely. She doesnt nip me but has done the better half and little un who "flaps" a bit when he get stressed due to his aspergers and she obviously gets a bit confused by his behaviour not knowing whether he is playing or upset. Slowly seem to be breaking her of this by my wife crying "ouch" whenever she does it and her ears go back and she looks sorry . Any other techniques to help break her of nipping would be appreciated. Have been told one thing not to do is to hold her mouth closed which seems daft to me anyway but is what some people try to cure this habit. Anyhow, will give her a few more days as she seems to be steadily improving but a visit to the vets seems in order if her stomach doesnt settle soon. thanks again, and a belated Happy New Year to all :y

nipping is a good sign, to them its like kissing, when she nips she just wants reassurance so give her a stroke on her chest area around by her hart eventually she will stop and know that you want her and love her. :y
