.....went into town today to the motor factors to buy an oil filter for the 'pup. mobile', as one of my Christmas presents was 6 litres of 10-40; thankyou Santa

The friendly owner of the factors has been checking his 'books' for 2010 and was telling me that (in general) his sales of oils and filters have dropped 75% in the last year and specifically cam-belts; sales of which fell by 80% (of those sold, nearly-all were bought by local garages)......so, routine servicing must`ve been one of the things that people have really cut back on in these strictured times.
It`s not all bad news though: for, sales of antifreeze, tow-ropes and screenwash were generally up 600% on 2009.

When I worked for a Motor Factors back in the 70s (delivering to shops in N London mostly) there was no mark-up on oil at all and we shifted tons of it (literally).  Strange situation but the oil companies appeared to have us over a barrel (pardon the pun).  It was the heaviest item on the vans.

Agreed......As a teenager in the late seventies I worked briefly at Halfords . We would all get a boll**king from the manager if we did not sell a filter every time we sold 5 litres of Castrol GTX 20/50......We were always told that the oil was a"loss leader".....and any profit was made on the oil filter alone....

thats why trade price on filters is 50/60% less.
