Do you remember these.
« on: 07 January 2011, 12:24:18 »

Am sure we had a nodding bird in the house as a kid, not sure what happened to it.

On a serious note, I wonder how many of these the avarage house hold would need to make a difference to this guys claims.

Oh that takes me back! 8-)

When they first appeared, I was nowt-but a youngster, with my face pressed against the window of the local house-wares shop watching them 'drinking'.......We couldn`t afford one (or so I was told!) ::)

Later-on, I grew up not to be able to afford a Newton`s Cradle.......I sooooooo wanted one! ;D

The Blackpool novelty shops used to be full of them when I was a kid.
We ended up with one that lived in Mum's display cabinet and only came out for special occasions. ;D ;D

Debs and you Skruntie must have had wicked parents!!! :P :P :P

You weren't both in a novel by Mr. Dickens by any chance? :-/ :-/

You know, the one that featured Scrooge? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

I can just picture two Victorian children, their wet noses pressed against the glass of the windows to the great emporium that sells magical drinking birds.  Little Skruntie asks
"Daddy [Mr Scrooge] can we have one of those please?"

"Oh yes!"  says his sister Debs, in her dirty white dress, with holes in the sleeves made by mice, "Can we Daddy?"  "Please" "It is Christmas!"

"No!!! You cannot" answered Scrooge.  "You children cost me more than the Royal Navy costs this country!"

Little Skruntie and Debs turn away, sobbing, knowing they would have to wait until they grew up to buy a magical drinking bird.  They walked back to their dark and dank home, filled with sadness. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

TBH Life as a kid for me was nothing like the kids of today have got.

My Mum and Dad worked as a team and they both said no.  Dont get me wrong, nice clothes, well fed etc but nothing much in the way of big pocket money etc.

Any way as I got older I worked out what my Dad had done.  He had been concentrating on paying off a huge mortgage whcch they had taken on 1966/67 for nearly £2000 then they added an extention to the house 4 or 5 years later that cost more than the house did.

But when he had paid it off we certainly reaped the benefits as kids.  Depending on age we gor hifi's nicer clothes and were all taken on holiday abroad for the 1st time for us.

So cant complain, and we allways had fantastic birthday and Christmas pressents. :y
