Any ebay wizards on here as got a problem!
« on: 12 January 2011, 19:59:05 »

Anyone here know if there is a way to tell when you've sent another member a message if they have read it through their ebay account, in other words, some kind of read receipt?.

Bought an Omega item off someone on ebay, paid £40 for the item, £30 for the postage.  And told them to send it to another address due to the size of item (before Xmas).  Received it today, they sent it to directly to my address even though I'd asked them otherwise.  Ended up having to get another company to take it to my original destination.
They're a supposed business selling on ebay and they're saying that they didn't receive my message.

Told them I'd sent an email asking this, now they're saying they didn't receive an email / message (even though I know they would have received a message through their ebay account). And now saying if they refund me for the post, they would of only sold the item for a tenner!.

Anyone able to advise if I've any recourse in getting the postage refund back due to their error or is this just a case of having to right it off?.

I think that if you specify an address in checkout and then have to get it sent elsewhere you have no recourse.  Try eBay dispute, if anyone can see if they actually received and read an email they can.

if you paid by paypal do NOT expect anything back

ebay sellers are NOT covered for any sort of claim if they send an item to an address other that the one registered on the buyer's paypal account so its possible they've done it to cover themselves

i hope this helps, if not, if you have the message on your ebay sent messages folder try contacting ebay incase there's a way they can help

Judging by what people say about ebay themselves on here and elsewhere I'm not expecting to get any help from directly from them.
Hence why I've been trying to find out if there was anyway I could find if there was some form of read receipt somewhere myself.  Just spent half and hour looking through loads of ebay pages in the hope of, but no luck.

Not expecting to get any joy from the seller either, judging by the response I've received from them just, from asking if they would show a goodwill guesture due to their error.

"why wudnt i be lefted with £10 ? you paid £40 for item £30 post it cost
£30 to post and it got sent to the address on ebay ebay rules".  :(

I'll try ebay as nothing else I can do.  But would at least like to find out if they did get the message and trying it on!.

Thanks for your advice all.  Any further advice will be greatfully received.

Thanks to this happening, it's put me right in the poo financially now till end of month.  :'(

I would agree with that Danny, many sellers now specify on their listing that items will only be dispatched to the registered PayPal address.

Goose, I am afraid whether they got the message or not is irrelevant. They have followed ebay /paypal guidelines. If they hadn't and the package had got lost they would have been in the sh1t.

I sell a lot on ebay and small items I don't mind taking the risk (and sometimes do lose out) but larger orders ALWAYS go to the address ebay /paypal give me. Admittedly I give the buyer the choice to accept the situation or cancel the order.

Okay, fair enough, perhaps I should of asked if they were prepared to send to alternative address before bidding (lesson learned).  But the advert didn't specify that they will only post to 'registered address'.  And never had a problem with other sellers doing this for me until now.
Oh well, numpty me should of thought things through looking back on it  :( :'(

I do agree that it's a shame GM, eBay/PayPal can be difficult to deal with in everything but the most clear-cut cases.

One to be put down to experience, as you say. :(

they dont officially have to specify it as its in the rules

its only ever gonna be goodwill if they agree to send to alternative addresses, i myself have had an item sent to an alternative address, depends on the seller, but not something i do regularly

a guy bought a boot spoiler off me and had his address as his royal mail office where he worked, i posted it clearly marked for his attention and it was returned to me as "refused"!! i had to charge him again to send it to his home address, and i had it tracked incase he argued no arrival, but all was well

The "Ebay experience" is not, I am afraid to say, what it used to be.  But then, what is ? :-?

I think I'll take a leaf out of your book H.C. and do that myself, send to registered address.
Put it as part of the description listing, that will only post to registered address, or buyers risk to alternative.  :-[
