Thanks! I was in Mombasa in ..... er 1985 :-/ and USS Kitty Hawk dropped anchor outside of the harbour. There were something like 5000 crew on it,  & even when were miles apart it looked huge! They (US crew) reckoned that fwd & aft of the ship were separate drafts!  :o
I'm sure that Nige will correct me if needed, but I believe that these types of US carrier carry more fighter aircraft than the RAF own.

You have to look twice to realize the scale of the vessel to it's surroundings & how hard the tugs are working to dock it. :y

I think I know what the boat is and we have some smaller ones. As for the funny flying things, we don't use them on our boats..... well not for 10+ years anyway.  :D

Does dwarf anything we have, I wonder if that was going through the minds of the morons who run MOD?

USA have loads of ships and planes, let them deal with it?  :-/

Yes it is, just along from what was known as the Customers House landing, and opposite the ex-site of "number 8 buoy" were the great ships (usually RN in the great days!) moored.   Crucifix Hill, the road that goes up from dock level to Florina is visible on the right hand side.  "Harper House" where I lived as a kid is on that road and overlooked the Grand Harbour, and number 8 buoy in particular. The Customs House area and along were the carrier is docking has been redeveloped since my time, and now big ships, like passenger liners and naval craft dock directly alongside the shore, with No 8 buoy now removed.

Even the USA are feeling the financial pressures, and are now down to 11 carriers.  This particular one was decommissioned in 2007, and is now a potential museum piece. ;) ;)

....................and this is a reverse picture, viewed from the battlements above the road into Valletta, of ships of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet in 1935, moored at number 8 and, if I remember correctly, number 9 buoys firing a salute on King George V Silver Jubilee:

Possibly that we have a lot less money and a lot less people than they do?

That's definitely the case.  If anyone has ever seen how the americans treat their soldiers, there can be no doubt, regardless of their financial difficulties.  They have always done things biggerand been more brasher.

I have no qualms in this as, if the money is there then why not use it for your fighting men, just as it should be used to help those in need.
