SWMBOs laptop suffered the 'black screen of death' about a year ago.

My plan was to recover her personal data and either fix windows or re-install it so I downloaded an Ubuntu recovery disk and left her to sift through the hard disk contents.

After a week of running from the live CD I shrank the windows partition to make space for an Ubuntu install (to allow it to run at a sensible speed).

A year on and Ubuntu is still in use. I never did find out how to fix the windows registry and Ubuntu 'just works'.

Latest update on the computer is that it now boots to the windows flag emblem....then goes no further, just sits there with the emblem and the blue moving line below it. Left it for ten minutes and it still shows the same screen >:(  I will try to get it to boot in safe mode,  and run the tests you have provided earlier :y
Really baffling me, this one >:(

Not a stupid question at all, Shackeng.... ;)
That was next in line...however, in safe mode it locks on the page that scrolls down all the drivers...you know the one...Multi (0)Disk(0)RD13K.....Partition(1)\Windows \Sys32\ Drivers\ WMILIB.sys......or very near to that :y Fills the screen then locks. :(

Last time I had a failure I had to use a rescue disc to extract all my files and then reformat and re-install Windows. It only took about half a day. I can't remember the disc, I borrowed it from a friend, but it works from the pre-boot stage. HTH :y

Not a problem mate.... :y
I have decided to pull it apart, check all connections, in a full rebuild, then reload windows and see what happens :y
I shall then install and run each set of drivers for the motherboard (usb, on board video, ethernet) and see if it runs and do the same for each piece of software I install.
Can't see any other option as it won't boot at all :'(

Other option of purchase gone as STMO123 has gone quiet since I suggested he pays for it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
