Quite an interseting site that lets you see actual speeds attained by individual customers of various suppliers.  Type in a postcode and see what speeds folk are really getting near you:

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/broadband_speed_in_my_area.aspx

It is one of those speed check sites but, if you wish, you can give them your postcode and make your results visible on the map.

Seems pretty clear that most of the copper based suppliers fall woefully short of their claimed "up to" speed, and you can see which ones are best and worst.

Love 'em or loathe 'em, Virgin generally seem to give pretty close to their claimed speeds (when they are actually working at all  ;) ).

I know a priviledged individual that has a trial Infinity in his office, but the full blown, FTTP one, 100Mb.

I would have to say it is quite impressive....

If only :(

My only broadband in the office is a normal 8Mb line (though it does sync at 8Mb :D). Obviously have the normal work network as well.

Nope, this is a very good friend of mine, who has always assisted in getting my 2 broadband lines here to be as good as they can be...  ::)

Anyone on it yet?

My exchange is meant to be done by the end of the year, and it sounds very tempting

Have you used BT's Infinity service checker?
I just did, and it claimed for my address, max of 17 megs download.....available 31st Dec 2010....im suppose to be getting 8megs now ....  :-/

What good is a 100mph slip road when the motorway is only doing 40mph

The power of the ad man. Everything that is new and exciting has to become old and boring and not up to the job very quickly, else they wont be able to sell you the next new and exciting thing.
Cars, internet, even rather washing powder.

Will be as of tomorrow - so if I don't post for the foreseeable future you can be assured that things have gone teats up.

look forward to the reports  :y

Installation took 55 minutes from initial service cut to being on-line again.

Max speed with Virgin up to now was around 1.4 download .34 upload (according to those speed-check sites) sometimes slower but mostly in that region.

Current speed, according to those same sites over the last 10 tests, has averaged out at 35.0  down and 6 up (approx)

I've no doubt that these figures will vary and I've yet to see what they're like at peak times but I suspect that the new service will be quite a bit faster than the previous one.

In all it seems to have been a worthwhile move - so far - only time will tell.  Even though I've taken the U/L service with calls I'm paying about £30 per year less than the previous set up with BT providing the telephone service and Virgin the broadband.

I recently signed up for BT infinity. I live in Manchester and the speeds are 21 mbps download and 1.4 mbps upload (over a wireless connection).
If I plug in the ethernet cable I get 36 mbps download and 1.6 upload. The speeds are limited to 40mbps and 2mbps according to the deal I took out.
So its faster and cheaper than my last deal with BT. :y

I have seen downloads on my mates, errr, 'special' line in his office, 10MBytes per sec :o.  Impressive stuff.

Obviously as it ramps up, the ISPs will have to have download limits, traffic shaping, or both.

BT seemed to have learnt a lot from swallowing up Plusnet (king of the traffic shapers) about how NOT to do it ;D

In fairness, BT (as in the ISP) do tend to do the job properly, and fit in better with the way BT (the wholseale provider) designed the setup.

Aye. When I were a lad, we used to dream of fibre. We used to have to make do wit' 300 baud acoustic coupler on a BBC micro, and when our dad got home, he used to thrash us fer wasting his phone bill. ;D
